Job Description
Assistant Editor – Remodeling and ProSales
Hanley Wood Media, Inc. is currently seeking an Assistant Editor to join the Editorial Department. This Assistant Editor contributes significantly to the success of two Hanley Wood brands: Remodeling, which serves professional remodelers, and ProSales, which serves executives at building material suppliers. The Assistant Editor’s main duty is to produce many types of content for the two brands, including long- and short-form web stories, magazine articles, curated content, story abstracts, and social media contributions. This person also will be called upon from time to time to work in video, infographics, and public settings.
Major Job Responsibilities and Related Duties:
• Research, write for, and edit all print and digital products. As currently envisioned, the assistant editor would be expected to write at least one major feature per month, one or two smaller features per month, and several smaller (2- to 4-paragraph) pieces per day, plus collate/curate other content that turn up in the normal news-gathering process.
• Dig deep into the worlds of remodelers and building material dealers so that one is capable of writing sophisticated articles that bring high value to the readership.
• Play a significant role in contributing to, managing, and ultimately expanding Remodeling and ProSales’ social media engagement via LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
• Assist in organizing events and projects. Examples include:
◦ ProSales 100
◦ Remodeling’s Big50
◦ ProSales’ Excellence Awards
◦ The Remodeling 550
◦ The Remodeling Design Awards
◦ ProSales’ Dealer of the Year
• Contribute to story ideas and editorial planning.
• Help identify new and different ways for the Remodeling and ProSales brands to grow and to better serve our audiences.
• Travel as needed. (Going out of town roughly 5x/year would not be uncommon.)
• Work occasionally with freelancers and contributors.
• Speak publicly at events such as the ProSales 100 Conference and Remodeling Leadership Conference.
• Contribute to corporate initiatives.
Performance Expectations
• Show consistent improvement in areas such as web content, infographics, story writing, headline writing, data collection, and data analysis.
• Become known in the industry as an authority on building material dealers and on professional remodelers.
Qualified Candidates will possess the following:
• Minimum bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated writing and editing skills in a professional setting.
• Ability to communicate objectives and goals to fellow staffers and to senior management
• Familiarity with writing, editing, computation, web, and pagination software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; basic web programs like Google Docs, simple databases; social media systems such as Facebook; and professional editing programs like InCopy, WoodWing, and WordPress.
• Strong sense of professionalism as well as a willingness to adapt in line with our business needs.
• Experience in construction and/or material distribution helpful but not required.
*Please include a cover letter along with your application.
