Title: VP, Publisher, Professional Books & Curricular Resources

Role Summary:
As a senior leader on the Heinemann Management Team, the Publisher works in partnership with the EVP, General Manager, to define a strategic and dynamic vision for the acquisition of the highest quality Professional Books and Curricular Resources, shaping the development of a list that embodies the mission of Heinemann and holding all projects to the highest standards of transformative educational value. The successful candidate combines both editorial and business proficiencies and sensibilities, and oversees the development and growth of a network of authors and other educational influencers. Working in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, the Publisher leads a team of Acquisition Editors, a Managing Editor, a Developmental Editor, Editorial Coordinators, and Contracts, Rights and Permissions staff Key responsibilities include acquisition management, people management, budget management, and cross-company collaboration.
Primary Responsibilities:
People Manager
• Enable and empower people to do their best work in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation and fosters development and learning.
• Translate the company’s strategic vision, align group’s work, and help individuals understand their impact on HMH’s success. Assess direct reports’ performance and partner on career planning.
• Collaborate and be a catalyst, breaking down complex problems into simple solutions and leading through change.
Senior Leader
• Member of the management team and key contributor to the development and implementation of Heinemann’s overarching publishing strategy. Participates in the development of company initiatives, and helps guide the implementation of such initiatives.
• Develops vision for the future of Professional Books and Curricular Resources based on knowledge of the field. Collaborates with others in company to implement this vision.
• Builds and strengthens individual and company-wide relationships with key authors, and is a senior presence at conferences/meetings.
• Conversant about publishing financial drivers and goals, and applies that knowledge when making decisions. Develops business plans and justifications on a per-project basis, as needed.
• Supervises and mentors Acquisition Editors, Managing Editor, Developmental Editor, others on team. Develops and retains talent by establishing clear goals, coaching, and recognition. Oversees professional development growth for staff (meetings, courses, conferences, etc).
• Sets acquisition goals and partners with Acquisition Editors in the development and implementation of a plan to meet those goals.
• Participates in proposal reviews (acting as key decision-maker as needed) and oversees overall project development.
• In collaboration with Managing Editor, manages season lists, ensuring balance, diversity and steady flow of titles to market.
• In collaboration with the Production Director, develops and manages project budgets and schedules, identifying and facilitating process/resource efficiencies and ensuring all projects adhere to budget, schedule, and quality expectations.
• Develops and manages department budget.
• Negotiates contracts, other high-stakes talks, as needed.
• Actively builds relationships across Heinemann, supporting information sharing and collaboration between departments.
• Remains current with developments in the field and monitors competition.
• Travels to meetings/conferences.
Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Teaching experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge & Skills: Minimum of ten years demonstrated responsibility in similar publishing capacity, preferably with educational focus >. Proven ability to lead and manage teams. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills across all mediums. Excellent organizational and problem-solving aptitude. Deep understanding of current educational issues and concerns. Able to deliver market-appropriate projects on budget and schedule.
