Web Producer, The New Yorker
The New Yorker is seeking a Web producer and copy editor to join its digital newsroom. The hired applicant will work four weekdays and one weekend day each week. Those interested should send a cover letter and CV to nathan_burstein@newyorker.com and sandeep_issac@condenast.com.
The role of the Web producer is to copy-edit pieces for newyorker.com on a wide variety of topics, as well as update the home page and section pages, produce newsletters, and be involved with social-media promotion. A good candidate has the ability to read Web pieces with a critical ear, recasting for clarity and concision when necessary, and to move through news posts quickly and accurately, looking for mistakes of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax. Candidates will also write headlines and other display copy.
Applicants should have a strong sense of The New Yorker’s tone and sensibility, and a serious interest in learning the magazine’s extensive house style. Candidates should be comfortable learning new editorial systems.
The role is a full-time position, at our offices in New York (can be remote on weekends), and sometimes requires working late nights, depending on the demands of the news cycle, and occasional holidays.
Requirements:
Candidates must have:
• at least two years’ experience as a copy editor
• mastery of the history, style, and values of The New Yorker
• a strong interest in current affairs, and a willingness to work at the speed of the Web
• a flair for writing display copy that engages the reader and adheres to The New Yorker's distinctive voice and outlook
• an interest in digital journalism and an ability to meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks simultaneously
• the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
