Description
The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO) (Boston, MA) seeks a full-time General Manager.
As a member of BYSO’s Senior Staff, the General Manager leads operational and organization wide efforts and personnel to support the 600 students and families served by the BYSO who participate in BYSO's regular season, camp, tours, Intensive Community Program (ICP) and Boston Public Schools String Training Program.
Position Reports to: Executive Director
Primary Responsibilities:
• Implement and oversee policies and procedures regarding safety and well-being of BYSO’s students
• Work as part of Senior Staff to set policy and manage day-to-day administration of BYSO
• Hire, train, and manage four staff members plus Boston University student workers
• Budget and manage annual operational expenses and tuition revenue
• Negotiate contracts with artistic staff, guest artists, and performance venues
• Develop annual master schedule including weekly rehearsals and 20 concerts in 10+ venues
• Work closely with BYSO board on various committees including strategic, facilities planning, and ICP
• Communicate daily with wide constituency of students, parents, teachers, staff, and vendors
• Develop and manage community partnerships with local and regional organizations, including the City of Boston, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Children’s Museum, and Boston’s Museum of
African American History
• Oversee logistical operations for weekly rehearsals and concerts for eight ensembles; plan and oversee logistics for annual two-week camp in Maine; produce annual semi-staged opera with professional cast and crew; oversee BYSO’s annual auditions for over 800 candidates; and plan and manage BYSO’s international tours
Educational/Professional Requirements:
• Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Music and a minimum of 8-10 years of broad production and management experience required in a professional orchestra, music school, or music presenting organization
• Proven ability to effectively manage a large staff, budget, and a rigorous schedule
• Demonstrated skill in prioritizing and addressing a very broad range of tasks in a fast-paced environment with meticulous attention to detail
• Proven experience in effectively managing the needs and expectations of a wide range of constituents
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• History of effective interpersonal skills with ability to mitigate sensitive and/or challenging issues
• Experience with standard business software and information technology
• Candidate must have significant experience in independent work and must be independently motivated
• A sense of humor is a must

Compensation: Salary commensurate to experience
Duration: Full time, effective immediately upon hire
