Description
The American Academy of Arts and Letters is an honor society of the country’s 250 leading architects, artists, composers, and writers. Each year the Academy elects new members as vacancies occur, bestows over 70 awards and prizes, exhibits art and manuscripts, funds performances of new musical theater works, and purchases artwork for donation to museums across the United States.
The Director of Facilities and Construction will manage the operations of the Academy’s campus, which is comprised of three landmarked buildings built between 1906 and 1931 and located on Audubon Terrace in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Ideal candidates have high performance standards, experience managing teams, and an appreciation for the arts.
Responsibilities include:
-Managing facilities staff, including hiring and training new employees, giving feedback on employee performance, scheduling staff, and adjusting the responsibilities of the facilities staff as needed.
-Managing short- and long-term construction projects, including a multi-year campus renovation master plan for which work is to commence in the summer of 2018.
-Representing the Academy with inspectors, architects, consultants, engineers, and contractors.
-Overseeing the care and upkeep of the Academy’s campus, including coordinating external maintenance procedures and vendor contracts for HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, boilers, elevators, fire safety, and security systems. This includes managing various city permits.
-Planning operational and facilities logistics for special events.
-Overseeing maintenance needs, equipment condition, and the stocking of supplies.
Minimum required education: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent level of education and experience.
Required experience: At least 5 years of experience in construction and/or building maintenance. Experience in facilities management and oversight of renovations is preferred.
Required skills, knowledge, and abilities: Excellent organization and problem solving; knowledge of building infrastructure, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC systems; experience in building maintenance and operations, with emphasis on infrastructure upkeep; familiarity and ability to read blueprints and construction documents; knowledge of NYC building codes and construction rules.
