Overview
Fantastic career opportunity to be an editor with the world’s largest Bible publisher. The person selected for this position will have the opportunity to work with the top English Bible translations (KJV, NKJV, NIV, NASB, NRSV, and more), and will partner with the most influential Bible teachers and authors to create compelling new Bible-related materials.
The Editor is responsible, both for elected and assigned titles, for the day-to-day management of the manuscript, from content editing to copyediting to the project’s completion.
The Editor will be involved with the product at all stages: providing input at titling and packaging meetings, directing the work of copyeditors and proofreaders, incorporating author changes, and teaming with the typesetter and creative director to ensure the best possible product makes it to market on schedule.
These may include new titles, repackaged/repurposed titles, line extensions, print and digital products. The Editor will work in an interdisciplinary team environment and with outside partners, such as authors and freelance proofreaders, but also thrive as an independent self-starter.
Responsibilities
• Project Management: Manages every detail of the editorial process – from receiving, organizing and editing manuscripts to print-ready files. This involves content editing, line editing, indexing, working with outside freelancers to handle copyediting and proofreading tasks, and managing the page stage of the typesetting. Manages the details of numerous projects at once, from setting up appropriate filing system to facilitating the approval of final files.Collaborates with Thomas Nelson marketing, design, composition, and production departments to coordinate schedules and bring product to market in a timely manner. In partnership with the Managing Editor, the Editor will develop and proactively maintain schedules for each assigned project.
• Quality Control: Serve as a key contact for internal partners on matters of manuscript development and editorial tone/style, as well as conformity to appropriate style guides. Assures completion of editorial tasks within quality control standards, including biblical and theological accuracy within the bounds of mainstream (Nicene) Christianity.
• Author Care and Development: Maintain contact with authors, agents, and freelancers as needed, ensuring delivery of manuscript as scheduled, obtaining author approvals, and securing/managing various guides, appendices, indexes, endorsements, and permissions. Also responsible for assisting authors in the process of developing written content as needed.
• Manuscript Preparation: Tagging/styling each project manuscript in order to facilitate design and typesetting.
• Proposal Development: Supervises special projects as needed, such as leading or collaborating on smaller teams to further flesh out product proposals.
• Bible Group Teams: Represents assigned projects at team meetings, marketing team meetings, and sales conferences.
• Marketing Collateral Development: Reviews and edits marketing copy as needed by marketing team members.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge: Bible content and theology as confessed throughout mainstream (Nicene) Christianity required; thorough understanding of distinguishing characteristics of top 7 English Bible translations preferred.
Work Experience: 4-5 years in publishing (Christian publishing preferred); facility with p-to-e publishing; project management experience; 1-2 years with Chicago Manual of Style
Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or similar area required. Graduate degree in biblical studies or a related field strongly preferred.
Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with leading Bible publishers and Bible products; prominent spokespersons for the Christian community; movements/trends in current Christian culture.
