Director of Development (Full-time, Permanent)
The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) is a $3.4 million nonprofit performing arts center in Essex County, NJ. SOPAC is a regional cultural destination committed to offering innovative artistic and cultural experiences for diverse audiences within an intimate, inviting environment. SOPAC is located in downtown South Orange next to the NJ Transit train station, and includes a 439-seat theater; a Loft space for classes, parties, & performances; and a multi-screen cinema. SOPAC seeks a poised professional with fundraising experience, superb organizational skills, and excellent communications for the Director of Development role. Must have a warm and welcoming personality, flexibility, and function well in a team-oriented environment. The Director of Development is responsible for implementing SOPAC’s fundraising strategy to increase philanthropic revenue from individual and institutional sources, and through special events. Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Governors, the Director of Development will craft strategy and drive momentum to generate a sustainable pipeline of funding to meet the organizations short and long-term needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work with Executive Director and Board to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan with a broad range of strategies (including individuals, corporate, foundation, and government) to maintain diverse sources of contributed income and to cultivate, recognize and solicit donations from targeted constituencies.
• Lead and motivate the Development team of a full-time manager and part-time special events coordinator through effective management, communication, and goal-setting.
• Implement annual goals and objectives. Maintain calendar of deadlines and development activities.
• Ensure that membership benefits are fulfilled, and the needs of SOPAC members and donors are met.
• Maintain existing funding sources through timely solicitations and ongoing stewardship/recognition, with an eye to expand support and involvement.
• Write grant proposals, as well as interim and final reports to funders, meeting deadlines and ensuring high-quality submissions.
• Ensure that all grant obligations and sponsorship commitments are met, in partnership with senior staff.
• Research and identify new funding sources and initiate requests.
• Formalize a major gifts program, identify prospects, and initiate requests with the active
support of the Executive Director and Development Committee. Maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects for major gifts.
• Provide ongoing stewardship to the Board, major donors, and corporate and foundation contacts.
• Ensure prompt acknowledgement of all gifts and sponsorships.
• Draft appeal, solicitation, and acknowledgement letters.
• Serve as staff liaison for cultivation and special fundraising events, including developing mailing lists, event management, and follow up recognition and solicitation.
• Work with Executive Director to develop annual organizational budget by identifying sources and amounts of contributed income.
• Work with Director of External Relations and Marketing team to develop strategies for increasing visibility of SOPAC to support fundraising efforts.
• Participate in organizational and strategic planning.
• Provide materials to Executive Director as needed, including donor or prospect research, letters of solicitation or acknowledgement.
• Provide ongoing reports to the Executive Director and the Board on fundraising income and initiatives.
• Communicate regularly with staff, Board, and external stakeholders to reiterate the case for philanthropic support and to clarify giving objectives and opportunities.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, with minimum three years fundraising and/or leadership experience in a nonprofit organization.
• Ability to successfully cultivate, build relationships, and secure funding from individuals and institutions.
• Superior writing and communication skills.
• Familiarity with database and fundraising software, experience with Salesforce and/or Patron Manager preferred.
• Strong organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize among multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Warmth, sense of humor, and flexibility required.
• Excellence in customer service and problem solving.
• Enthusiasm for and knowledge of the performing arts.
• Familiarity with Northern New Jersey fundraising community preferred.
