Job Description
Assistant Editor, ARCHITECT (AR)
Hanley Wood is seeking an Assistant Editor for our Business Media division. The Assistant Editor is responsible for creating content and executing special projects for the three brands in our Design Group—Architect (AR), Residential Architect (RA), and Architectural Lighting (AL)—which target a professional audience of architects, designers, lighting designers, and specifiers of commercial and residential projects. Specifically, the Assistant Editor will be leading our products coverage, which includes producing original print and online stories on product releases, trends, developments, and designers. Additionally, the Assistant Editor will cover breaking technology and design news. The ideal candidate will have solid and detailed reporting skills and be adept at learning and mastering digital platforms, savvy in time management and project execution, and able to cultivate a network of sources. This position also requires travel (10%).
Major responsibilities and related duties include:
• Reporting and writing original content, which includes weekly product roundups for web, monthly product round-ups for print, daily breaking news, weekly design-tech roundups, Q+As with designers, the bi-monthly How to Specify department, and short- and long-form reported stories
• Representing Hanley Wood at domestic and international trade shows and press junkets with same-day turnaround for event coverage as well as Day Two stories
• Understanding and identifying broad themes and ongoing developments in architectural, building, and lighting products
• Contributing enterprise story ideas and leads
• Identifying, contracting, editing, and managing freelance writers (with direction from supervisors) capable of executing a specified assignment
• Managing and supporting special editorial projects, including AR’s R+D Awards and Product Call programs
• Publishing and publicizing content and special editorial projects on social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
• Establishing a network of include architects, designers, specifiers, manufacturers, fabricators, technology partners, and media/public relations representatives
• Participating in editing and copyediting of print and digital content
• Building out and deploying daily and weekly newsletters as needed
• Managing editorial interns and their assignments and workload
Qualified candidates should possess the following education and skills:
• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in English or Journalism
• Minimum one (1) year editorial experience
• Demonstrated research, writing, and communications skills
• Ability to multi-task and manage several projects and stories simultaneously
• Organized self-starter with a positive attitude
• Interest in architecture and the design profession, product design and fabrication, and emerging technologies
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs
• Proficiency in Adobe InCopy and content management systems (CMS) preferred
• Active presence on social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn
• Knowledge of web analytics and SEO preferred
