ABXY Gallery is looking for outstanding interns for the Summer of 2018!
ABXY is a Lower East Side Art Gallery specializing in emerging and outsider artists. From their Clinton Street headquarters, Barker provides studio space for her artists beneath the gallery while presenting socially beneficial exhibitions and events, which expand the conversation around contemporary art.
With a mission to deepen current understanding of contemporary art, programming at ABXY centers around curated discussions, experiential events, and meaningful publications, which encourage collaboration and illuminate the influence of contemporary culture on artists and aesthetics today.
Interns gain exposure to a multifaceted experience in the arts, in fields including curation, artist development, event management, collaborative organization
This is an opportunity to play a significant role in the early stages of the founder's projects, to interact with a diverse group of creative professionals including artists, collectors, curators, and creative directors.
This is an excellent opportunity for students or recent grads who want to learn first hand about emerging and contemporary art and artists. The internship is unpaid but we are happy to complete any necessary paperwork for college credit, if applicable.
Responsibilities:
+ Supporting director with basic gallery administration including cataloging new work, creating checklist/pricelist for exhibitions / clients, updating mailing lists, data bases, and gallery calendars, maintain gallery cleanliness and appearance, light scheduling correspondence
+ Assist Director with organizing art events / exhibitions
+ Periodic light art handling and assisting with installation and de-installation of exhibitions
+ Various research projects including identifying potential partners and artists to bring on for ongoing projects or new projects
+ Occasionally running errands or traveling to other galleries or artist's studios to transport work.
+ Walking Director's adorable French bulldog, Gordo
+Maintaining social media presence
Requirements:
+ Must own a laptop
+ Degree in Studio Art, Art History, Arts Administration or related field (current students or recent graduates).
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
+ Possess an understanding of how to define and maintain a social media presence
+ Familiarity with Mac operating platform, Microsoft office suites, Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop) a must, familiarity with ArtBase or similar database is a plus (we use Art Cloud).
+ Familiarity with CSS, HTML and WordPress a huge plus!
+ Candidates must be creative, entrepreneurial individuals passionate about contemporary art. Ideal candidates are motivated, able to think outside the box, detail oriented, and resourceful with the ability to maintain a professional manner, exercise discretion and sound judgment
+ Installation and Archiving experience a plus, candidates with excellent graphic design / photo editing skills encouraged apply.
+ Candidate must be available 2-3 days per week, Monday to Friday, from 11:30am - 6:30 pm each day, with ability to commit for at least three months. Candidate must also be willing to assist on occasional weekend and evening hours with workshops, exhibition openings, screenings and special events (TBD with much advance notice)
