WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida, is looking for a Real-Time/Special Projects Digital Editor to work in partnership with reporters to create highly produced enterprise/investigative and real-time journalism on our digital platforms that stands out from daily commodity coverage and broadcast stories.
The position will oversee our real-time coverage efforts, to include weekly/daily planning in conjunction with newsroom managers and the digital team; and the execution of our real-time strategy.
The right candidate will be someone who takes a big picture view, working in advance on investigative and enterprise stories to make them shine, in both design and content. Web production experience is a must as we're looking for someone who can polish stories to a high gloss.
Key Activities
On Enterprise/Investigative Special Projects:
• Partner with reporters on enterprise/investigative stories and work to gather or create video, documents, graphics, charts, maps, etc. that enhance the storytelling.
• Meet regularly with reporters to plan and execute enterprise/investigative content and collaborate on a social media plan.
• Work as a savvy social media expert by crafting content for station accounts that actively engages with our audience
• Apply knowledge of the dynamics of digital media as well as television content distribution, and actively work to gather elements advantageous to both platforms
• Act as a research partner to field crews, helping to foster enterprise story news gathering
• Oversee the completion of assignments, including planning, assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, evaluating results, etc
• Maintain a calendar of special projects and targeted real-time stories on all platforms.
On breaking real-time stories:
• Identify breaking news in real-time and aggressively gather facts for cross-platform distribution by managing all internal and external content. Prepare for cross-platform distribution.
• Work directly with reporters/photographers in the field to update content on all platforms.
• Get video from various sources (FTP, social media, VOD) to edit, and quickly turn for social/digital updates.
• Post updates on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and coordinate Facebook Lives with field crews.
• Work with web team to ensure that real-time stories are being featured on desktop, app, OTT.
• Monitor station email and scanners in real-time to stay ahead of stories as they occur in the community
Education and Experience:
• BS/BA in Journalism, New Media or related discipline
• Minimum 2 years of experience in content gathering and/or distribution background. Preferred focus in digital media, content management systems, basic HTML, image editing, web and TV-style writing and social networking.
• Computer skills including Microsoft Office, social media programs and newsroom computer systems, including iNews.
• Experience in videography and non-linear editing in Final Cut or Premier a plus.
• Experience managing a brand's social media accounts.
Skills and Abilities
• Excellent verbal, written and social media communication skills, with knowledge of broadcast and AP style.
• Technical proficiency in web production, HTML and experience with third-party products like Scribd, Document Cloud, Soundcloud, etc.
• Fast and eager learner with enthusiasm for real-time coverage and a desire to win.
• Identifies key barriers/core problems and applies problem-solving skills in order to deal creatively with complex situations.
• Thinks strategically to be competitive and innovative in a crowded marketplace. Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems.
• Operates with considerable latitude; independently performs assignments to results expected; determines and develops approach to solutions.
• Working knowledge of industry technologies and practices.
• Ability to collaborate well in a team and make decisions quickly during any type of coverage.
• Ability to work independently, and effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment by remaining calm under pressure.
