As a Senior Accountant I – Transaction Tax Compliance, you will develop your tax technical skills through analysis of complex transactional tax issues, critical thinking and innovative use of technology. This position is responsible for the day to day management of the relationship with U.S. Cellular’s outsourced transaction tax compliance vendor. This position is also responsible for continually monitoring the financial control processes and ensuring that tax and accounting transactions are executed in accordance with tax laws and established standards of internal control.
Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities
Principal Accountabilities
• Work closely with third party out-sourcing vendors to ensure all information is received accurately and timely and tax returns and payments are made timely and accurately.
• Reconcile tax reported and remitted by third party preparer to the tax accrual account.
• Perform monthly compliance process, including but not limited to the calculation of amounts sent to third party out-sourcing vendor and preparation of journal entries.
• Understand the sources of the tax return supporting documentation and reporting process including the flow of transaction taxes from the source documents, to the tax reports used for filing purposes, to the tax accrual accounts to ensure accuracy of information sent to third party out-sourcing vendor.
• Performs reconciliations of general ledger tax accounts.
• Perform periodic testing of key internal controls, and alerts management to any control deficiencies in a timely manner.
• Manage workload effectively and efficiently by prioritizing responsibilities.
• Provide functional advice or training to less-experienced associates.
• Ensure required tax return copies are maintained in accordance with U.S. Cellular policy.
• Provide business partners and management with variance analysis working with business partners to identify drivers behind variances.
• Responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable SOX controls.
Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements
Education/Experience
• 5+ years experience in finance or accounting preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA a plus.
• Experience with transactional taxes required.
• Experience with SAP and Vertex is a plus.
• Prior telecommunications industry experience is strongly preferred
Skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – ability to establish and maintain professional productive relationships.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, project management and planning skills and ability to meet highly detailed reporting requirements.
• Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft products, particularly in Excel, including the ability to perform pivot tables, VLOOKUP and high-level functions and formulas.
• Ability to balance assigned tasks, impromptu inquiries, and projects and efficiently utilize time.
• Strong writing and documentation skills.
