Senior Financial Analyst FP&A Capital Planning

HMH is looking for an experienced finance professional to join our Capital Planning team within Corporate FP&A. The Capital Planning team is responsible for the management and reporting of HMH’s overall capital expense budget (~$200M), and this position will report to the Sr. Director of Capital Planning. This role will be instrumental in advancing Capital Planning initiatives related to process improvements and the development of systematic tools. As such, the ideal candidate will have experience working with complex data sets and implementing tools to improve business processes.
This position requires a high level of problem-solving, flexibility, and initiative. The Senior Financial Analyst must be able to learn quickly, adapt to changing deadlines, prioritize appropriately, and work effectively across a large, diverse team of stakeholders. Candidate must be able to effectively communicate both positive and negative messages to peers and leaders and adjust to shifting priorities in an evolving, fast-paced environment. This position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience working in a financial role within a large organization.
• Manipulate and analyze large data sets
• Support the creation of aggregated capital reports and dashboards
• Support the financial close process, including financial reporting activities and variance analyses
• Assist with the building of tools to gather business information for capital budgeting
• Assist with the development and improvement of reporting and forecasting tools
• Develop project plans and lead others to meet deadlines
• Learn product development processes (traditional and digital)
• Interpret and apply financial accounting concepts, principles, and practices
• Validate financial models for consistency, reasonableness, and accuracy
• Prepare and communicate financial and/or operational presentations using charts, graphs, etc.
• Perform and interpret various financial analyses including variance, what-if, rate/volume assessments
• Develop and leverage relationships with internal business partners to expand influence and achieve key objectives
In addition to the financial experience requirements above, this position also has the following requirements:
• Experience working with multi-location, cross-functional teams
• Strong communication skills, in particular the ability to communicate financial concepts to diverse audiences across a matrixed organization
• Effective organizational and time management skills
• Proven ability to prioritize workload, work to deadlines, produce accurate results, and respond with flexibility
• Aptitude to own and manage small- to medium-sized projects
• Ability to summarize large, complex datasets using advanced Microsoft Excel functions
• Experience using ERP systems such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle, or other proprietary tools
• Project management experience
• 4 year degree with a concentration in finance, accounting, and/or economics
Preferred:
• Educational publishing experience
• Certification in project management
• Experience using consolidation tools such as BPC, Hyperion, or other proprietary tools
• Capital planning and analysis tools (SAP Project Systems, Tagetik)
• MBA, CMA, or CFA
Physical Requirements
• Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
• The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
