Overview
HarperCollins Publishers seeks an Designer to join the Interior Design Department, working in an exciting, fast-paced environment on fiction and non-fiction books, paperback originals, conversions and offsets. The Designer is responsible for all stages of interior book design for assigned titles from manuscript to bound books. Will work on books of simple to medium complexity.
Responsibilities
• Designs book interiors.
• Prepares sample pages for approval.
• Creates tight desktop templates, inputs text corrections, and handles all stages of book production for assigned titles.
• Designs photo inserts, binding die mechanicals and endpapers.
• Handles all stages of offsets and paperback conversions: inputs text corrections, updates front matter, adjusts pages and photo inserts to fit new trim size.
• Creates egalleys for marketing.
• Manages art program for assigned titles, if any: evaluates images for print, checks T-prints.
• Collaborates with design manager, managing editorial, production and ETM teams.
• Meets tight deadlines and maintains budgets for assigned projects.
• Tracks myriad pieces on projects and keeps accurate records.
• Downloads and uploads final files to DAM.
Qualifications
• Must possess 2+ years of prior relevant work experience to be considered at the Designer level
• Must demonstrate a proficient skill set in desktop publishing experience working with InDesign on a Macintosh
• Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator is a plus
• Working knowledge of ICML files and ebook creation a plus
• Detail-oriented and well-organized a must
• Flexible: Ability to juggle multiple projects with tight deadlines on a given day
• Good written and oral communication skills required
