The VP of Strategy and Business Development for Elsevier Reference Solutions has a senior role in shaping the Reference Solutions group's strategy and growth agenda, helping to lead the transformation of the business from reference to an analytics business. The Vice President of Strategy leads cross-functional teams across a range of complex project types with multiple components. These may include but are not limited to strategy design and planning, valuation and business case development, mission and vision refinement, and environmental and competitive monitoring.
The successful candidate will lead the development of the Business Unit strategy, including: synthesizing market and competitive information across multiple sectors, analyzing industry trends and customer needs, and developing recommendations that will accelerate growth in revenue and margins through investment, acquisition, divestiture or operational improvement. This is an executive level report that will report to, and work closely with, the MD of the business unit as well as the Elsevier central strategy team.
Work the executive management team to develop, translate, build and monitor cohesive strategies for the business unit; Keep pace with advances and changes in all areas of the business, and take advantage of those that will increase the company’s mission and profitability. Look for signals both inside and outside the company that could indicate threats to continued success or opportunities to grow the business and increase market share. Apply strong communications capabilities to inspire and empower the organization to achieve BU strategy; provide guidance, counsel, and direction to all personnel as it relates to Business Unit strategy.
Main Activities and Key Responsibilities
E&T and Reference Solutions Strategy
• Lead process and development of the annual Reference Solutions Strategy cycle, including:
1. Performance analysis, market trends, customer insights, and competitive landscapes
2. Coordination and alignment of product roadmaps, including organic and inorganic portfolio development
3. Development of the E&T and Reference Solutions revenue models and forecasts
• Support the development of investment plans and business cases by product groups/owners
• Support the development of long-term strategic priorities for E&T and Reference Solutions
• Lead and support ad-hoc strategic projects
1. E.g. adjacent market analyses; technology assessments, pricing
• Support preparation of regular reporting of the business to management (monthly operational reports; other dashboards and memos)
Merger & Acquisition
• Support process for analyzing Reference Solutions acquisition targets and preparing acquisition case:
1. Support BOI write-up and revenue forecast phase, and
2. Support Due Diligence process
Business Development and Strategic Alliance
• Initiate, develop and manage Reference Solutions strategic partnerships:
1. Business development and alliance opportunities that extend beyond individual products or segments
2. Develop customer involvement programs and deepen customer relations with Elsevier
Data-Driven Decision-Making & Analysis
•Drives formulation of overall research/testing strategy and ensures product decisions are based on data.
• Evaluates intangible and/or cross-business implications of strategic decisions.
• Prioritizes hypothesis-driven product evaluation strategies, including AB testing for interactive products, while contributing to broader data-analyses strategies and platforms.
• Is skilled in breaking down large complex issues into simpler elements that can be effectively addressed.
• Establishes aggressive KPIs for the team to measure success
• Leads teams to make decisions where quantitative data is unavailable
Strategy & Commercial Acumen
• Defines and articulates a clear product strategy within a specific market or geography.
• Gathers a wide range of information from internal and external sources to drive commercially viable decision or the product and organization.
• Ensures product strategy considers how the product requirements will be fulfilled through buy, build or partner options.
• Understands how commercial decisions for a product impact other areas of the business and customer.
• Proactively takes steps to capitalize on product opportunities presented by the market position.
• Tracks and analyzes product expenses, cost to revenue and profitability.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences
• Minimum of 15 years of experience in digital product development and management
• Experience working for companies offering B2B online information solutions to corporate/industry segments and markets is highly desirable
• Track record of successfully managing and delivering large, complex projects
• Advanced degree in engineering discipline is a plus
• MBA is a plus
• International experience a plus
