The Record Searchlight, recently named one of Editor & Publisher’s 10 newsrooms that “Do it Right”, is seeking a Local News Editor/Content Coach to be the hands-on leader of a powerhouse team of digital journalists. This individual coaches, supervises and directs the work of our 10 reporters and a photographer, encouraging independent planning and self-direction. Guides reporters and photographers by applying specific expertise to ensure that they create high quality content that fulfills the newsroom's strategy across all platforms. Focus areas include, but are not limited to: investigative reporting, narrative writing, photography and videography, beat development and digital content. Sometimes takes a hands-on approach to accelerate a story's path to publication. Guides journalists by consultation and coaching before, during and after the creation of content. Focuses on the most important, sensitive and complex stories. Candidates must have a strong editorial background working in the newsroom with editing, creating content and assisting reporters.
Primary duties:
• Supervises the work of reporters and photographers, with an emphasis on independent idea and content generation. Works individually with content creators by identifying areas for improvement and coaching them on how to elevate their work.
• Understands real-time audience analytics and uses them to guide decisions, balancing keen news judgement with the urgency that we grow audience and don’t play to an empty room.
• Line edits most copy produced in the newsroom, including breaking news, enterprise, sports and features.
• Edits breaking news copy with a quick, sure hand and fluency with style, grammar, libel law and ethical decision-making.
• Identifies and addresses training needs of individuals and groups.
• Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
• Develops relationships with contributors and community members.
• Interacts daily with readers on branded and personal (professional) social media accounts.
