Job TitleNews Director
The News Director position is one of the most critical positions in the station. As the day to day manager of the news operations, this person must understand, embrace and implement the long and short-term strategies of the station. The News Director will be responsible for creating and delivering multi-platform content that delivers the highest available audience and generates the highest ratings possible. This position will manage departmental expense budgets to control operating costs; find creative ways to keep newsroom employees motivated and engaged, negotiate vendor and personal service contracts, manage news employee retention and recruitment. This person should have a network in the industry to identify up and coming news talent. In addition, the News Director will be the primary point of contact in the newsroom, demonstrate fairness and consistency in all interactions and be a solid team player with other department heads.
Essential Job Functions:
• 45% - Manages station news brand on broadcast and digital platforms. Oversees informative, competitive, highly rated newscasts. Works with departments across the station to involve all employees in the news gathering process. Attracts, motivates and retains the best talent available in the market. Provides newsroom leadership direction, coaching, mentoring and supervision to employees. Sets and manages digital goals. Responsible for growing digital footprint in the market. Maximize digital reach to increase broadcast ratings. Lead market in digital audience reach and engagement.
• 15% - Monitors newscasts for accurate editorial content while keeping brand vision on track. Assists in reviewing scripts for accuracy, potential legal issues, content, value and relevancy.
• 15% - Collaborates with the general manager, consultants and Creative Services department to develop unique effective new promotion campaigns that set us apart from the competition. Assists in branding and market positioning of station to maximize impact in community.
• 15% - Develops news operating budget, closely monitors expenses including overtime and keeps expenses within the approved guidelines. Attends to administrative duties related to Workday and any other employee/compliance related processes.
• 10% - Closely monitors the competition and industry trends with particular emphasis on technological advancements in both broadcast and digital that increase audience reach and improve operational efficiencies.
Job Requirements:
Education – Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism or communications from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent training and/or experience.
Experience – Minimum five to seven years progressively responsible and successful news management experience with a proven understanding of news in the digital world. Experience must include success in management, production, and distribution of local news, plus a proven record of developing and implementing research-based strategic plans. Candidate needs demonstrated leadership and people management skills, and a successful track record using digital media assets in how the news is covered and distributed across multiple platforms.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Diverse knowledge of journalism, marketing, management, television production and digital media
• A passion for production and storytelling is essential, combined with an unwavering commitment to journalism ethics and standards.
• Must possess thorough understanding of television news operations and Nielson ratings. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Thorough understanding of the importance of promoting and branding a newscast.
• Must be a coach, mentor and motivator.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Travel Required: About 5-10%
