The Indianapolis Star is looking for a digital savvy coach to lead a team of 5 reporters that is primarily responsible for coverage in Hamilton County, which is a key target audience for IndyStar.
Hamilton County is among the fastest-growing and most affluent counties in Indiana and its communities often rank among the "best places to live" in the nation. Carmel also is home to the state's largest high school -- and academic achievement is an area of significant interest, as well as growth/development. The county recently became home to the Indianapolis area's first IKEA.
The Hamilton County team is comprised of an education reporter and two reporters who cover the cities in the county. We also expect to expand by one reporter on this team who will focus on "things to do" coverage. In addition, a fifth reporter who covers philanthropy and good deeds, also is a member of this team.
The Hamilton County coach/editor will provide direct supervision and coaching for the team's reporters, including story development, helping with strategic daily and long-term coverage decisions and back-end story editing. The coach will need to work collaboratively with other coaches, the digital desk, visuals department and with the news producer.
Understanding and following digital journalism best practices is a must. That includes social media promotion planning and strategies, understanding and engaging the audience, and ensuring the content effectively reaches -- and grows -- the target audience through use of posting strategies (time and day), effective use of links, use of video, and effective SEO and headline strategies.
This coaching position also requires versatility. The Hamilton County team is expected to produce strong beat coverage, identify community and regional trends, break significant news, and provide important accountability/watchdog journalism on municipal government issues.
Applicants must demonstrate a track record for keen news judgment, ethical decision-making and fair play. Candidates should have a college degree and at least five years of professional journalism experience.
This position reports to the News and Investigations Director.
