Position Summary:
We are seeking a senior executive to lead a team responsible for launching and growing content brands and experiences that continue to extend our portfolio beyond USA TODAY and 109 local news brands. The role requires a successful track record in media entrepreneurism, innovation, partnership development and growth of targeted audience groups and diversified revenues streams. The right person for this role will be a creative strategic thinker with a hunger and drive to build digital teams and content businesses that set up Gannett for a successfully diversified future. The position is preferably based in the DC or NYC area.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership – Leading with Foresight
• Provide exemplary leadership and execute the strategic vision.
• Excellent personal leadership, change management and ability to collaborate and influence cross-functionally—can conduct a dialogue that is intellectually honest, brings out diversity of ideas and creates the appropriate integration/connectivity.
• Strong communicator of the company’s strategic initiatives, purpose, vision, culture and plan.
• Lead the planning and oversee execution of the portfolio group’s business and content strategies. Creativity and an ability to develop and execute innovative approaches are essential.
• Proven ability to identify critical issues, prioritize appropriately, and execute quickly.
People Management & Development
• Attract, retain and develop top talent.
• Understand and execute work/life balance strategies for employees.
• Be a champion of diversity – with the understanding that diversity includes everyone and drives customer and operational innovation.
• Provide frequent coaching and feedback, and offer opportunities for growth and development.
• Manage for results in a metrics-driven environment.
Departmental success criteria
• Diversification and growth of audience mix
• Diversification and growth of revenue
• Financial health of brand portfolio within purview
• Funnel activity of brand experimentation
Success criteria include
• Total revenue from portfolio of brands and experiences, and diversification of that revenue
• Aggregate audience from portfolio and experiences, and diversification of that audience
• Aggregate profitability from the portfolio
• Number of new brands in development and launched
Education and Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in business, journalism or other subject in a liberal’s art field from an accredited institution. MBA a plus.
• 10-15 years of experience as a media entrepreneur, with emphasis on new digital brand and content development
• Experience working in industries undergoing substantial change and transformation.
• A history of successful leadership, innovation and goal achievement.
• Demonstrated change leader who collaborates and communicates effectively.
• Personal charisma, comfortable with public speaking and a commitment to staff interaction.
• Understanding of the changing media landscape and ability to adapt strategies that address continually changing market and consumer needs and desires.
• Demonstrated strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and coordinate in an environment of accountability.
• Demonstrated track record in recruiting a highly successful leadership team highly desirable.
• Experience driving a successful turnaround or transformation highly desirable.
Head of Content Ventures Skills and Specifications
• Digital/consumer revenue and audience development skills
• Entrepreneurial skills, including opportunity identification, business case development and national go-to-market execution
• Business line leadership and management
• Consumer-needs focused innovation skills, including Design Thinking and application of Lean Startup principles
• Partnership development experience
• Excellent communication and writing skills
• Ability to work under stress and within deadlines.
