Job Summary
The Manager Systems Engineering position provides leadership, management, direction, and vision to infrastructure engineers needed to design, engineer, implement, and transition new or enhanced infrastructure solutions for production use. The position works closely with enterprise architecture, infrastructure operations peers, product and project leaders/managers, and other in-house software developers. The position also directs the successful completion and delivery of respective components and any other related deliverables. This position may also oversee department budget. Additionally, this position reports progress to senior management and identifies and supports talent and defines resource requirements and allocations.
Responsibilities
• Effectively collaborate with Enterprise Architecture teams to understand enterprise standards, methods, patterns, and overall technical strategy
• Apply enterprise architecture standards to the design, implementation, and transition of new and enhanced engineering solutions to drive the adoption of standard solutions to replace one-off solutions
• Continually evaluate and promote opportunities to replace one-off solutions with standard engineered solutions where possible; build business cases as necessary
• Ensure engineered solutions meet financial, operational, security, reusability, performance, monitoring, resilience, and other requirements
• Plan use of new system features and hardware for new products and servers to improve overall operation of system and productivity of staff
• Complete management responsibilities to include performance management, hiring, and coaching of staff
• Serve as subject matter expert in demonstrating thorough understanding of major system components in completing assigned tasks (i.e., storage systems, Linux kernel, UNIX kernel, UNIX file system, and Windows infrastructure).
• Lead team of systems engineers to ensure timely and accurate performance of all team activities.
• Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems
• Ensure all staff is provided with training and resources needed to perform their jobs to the most outstanding degree possible
• Ensure all staff is provided with frequent feedback and coaching in order to meet and exceed individual and team performance goals consistently
• Manage and encourage new ideas from staff to foster improvements through innovations
• Empower the staff to be accountable and responsible for their own actions and decisions
• All other duties as assigned
Technical Skills
• Strong understanding of cloud computing, DevOps, automation, orchestration, and software engineer practices
• Strong knowledge of leading automation and orchestration tools
• Deep technical understanding of infrastructure core components such as network, storage, Linux and Windows server infrastructure
• Knowledge of scripts for automation
• Advanced understanding of industry technology language development trends
• Experienced in code review, promotion, release, and development approaches
• Exposure to development languages including but not limited to: Java/J2EE, JavaScript, JSP, C/C++, HTML, XML, SQL, Windows, UNIX, and .Net.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in project planning and management tools to manage project progress, budget, and scope
• Knowledgeable in all aspects of disaster recovery
• Strong skills in setting, communicating, implementing, and achieving business objectives and goals through the direct management of others
• Strong organization/project planning, time management, and change management skills across multiple functional groups and departments, and strong delegation skills involving prioritizing and reprioritizing projects and managing projects of various size and complexity
• Advanced problem-solving experience involving leading teams in identifying, researching, and coordinating the resources necessary to effectively troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues; prior success extracting/translating findings into alternatives/solutions; and identifying risks/impacts and schedule adjustments to facilitate management decision-making
• Advanced verbal and written communication
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills applicable to a wide audience including senior and executive management, customers, etc., including diction/terminology and presenting information in a concise and effective manner to clients, management, and various departments using assorted communication mediums
• Knowledge of system recovery procedures
Education
• 10+ years of Systems Engineering experience
• 2+ years of management experience
• BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience required, advanced degree preferred
