Assistant Editor, Dining
Overview
Chicago magazine is an authority in covering the city’s dining and restaurant world, and we’re currently seeking a smart, efficient assistant editor who’s passionate about food to join our award-winning team. As assistant editor, you’ll be tasked with bolstering our online dining coverage with both quick-hit news and incisive, entertaining features and trend stories. You’ll pitch and write both one-offs and recurring features for our print edition as well as guide pages through our editorial process. And you’ll assist with research, fact-checking, and other essential organizational duties.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Write and pitch stories for Chicago magazine’s dining section
-Manage production and scheduling for Chicagomag.com’s Dining & Drinking section, as well as regularly contribute stories
-Guide table of contents and other front-of-book pages through the editing process
-Perform as-needed fact-checking and research duties, including non-dining-related features and packages
-Maintain online database of restaurant reviews
-Assist with administrative duties, such as creating organizational spreadsheets for large feature packages
REQUIREMENTS
-Bachelor’s degree and one to two years’ experience working in print or digital journalism (food/restaurant coverage experience is preferred, but not required)
-Outstanding reporting and writing abilities
-A passion for reading and writing about eating, drinking, and the restaurant industry
-Strong organizational skills
-A detail-oriented editorial eye
-Experience fact-checking both short blurbs and complicated features
-Familiarity working with a CMS and a good sense of what makes stories work online
-Social-media fluency and a distinctive, clever voice on Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms
-Excellent interpersonal communication skills
