Description
The Animals Writer reports and writes daily Animals stories, such as translating new scientific discoveries from a scientific journal, covering breaking news about a wildlife-related topic, and explaining a viral animal photo or video—all while aggressively searching for exclusive stories no one else has. This writer works fast and accurately, as well as possesses baseline knowledge about the fields of wildlife biology and conservation. This person must have experience working in digital media, understand the fast-changing trends in the industry and be highly motivated to use innovative, original journalism to grow our audience across various platforms. S/he is an energetic self-starter who takes initiative in finding story ideas and sees them through from start to finish, including producing the story in our CMS. This candidate is also a team player, eager to learn from and work with their digital journalism colleagues and other departments such as Photography, Video, and Audience Development. S/he values quality journalism and strives to write stories as unique and thorough as possible given tight deadlines. The candidate is well versed in social media platforms and is interested in and open to using new technologies to get their work out there. S/he is also fascinated by the natural world and the creatures in it.
Responsibilities
• Pitch, write and produce daily stories, photo galleries, video captions, blog posts, etc.—plus occasional enterprise—on animals, animal behavior, new animal science, viral videos and photos, etc., working closely with Audience Development, SEO, and Insights & Analytics teams to produce stories that connect with big audiences and deepen audience loyalty.
• Work closely with National Geographic Magazine, Channel, Books and our archive to harvest their content for digital opportunities.
• Collaborate with video, photo, graphics, Speed Desk, and other teams to tell visual stories.
• Closely track performance of content to constantly refine sense of what’s working and what’s not and what we should be experimenting with, in everything from story selection to framing to presentation.
• Zealously use social and broadcast media platforms.
Qualifications
• BA with minimum 2-3 years of writing for a digital media outlet.
• Strong writing and interpersonal skills and self sufficiency.
• Ability to read and understand scientific journals.
• Proficiency in social media.
• Interest and experience in writing about animals.
• Self-initiative in pitching stories and taking direction from all members of the team.
