The Assessment Development Services division of Pearson is offering two part-time, hourly paid internships for beginning copyeditors for summer 2018—one position in Austin, Texas, and one position in San Antonio, Texas. Pearson is a global educational company and the internship will focus on educational publishing. We will provide intense training and mentorship. Interns will come away with an understanding of the publishing industry, including the specialized branch of assessment publishing. In addition, interns will receive a crash course in the profession of copyediting and will develop skills that will enhance their writing for academia as well as for any future jobs. Placement in this position will be competitive and will involve an initial assessment exercise and an interview.
Interns should be able to start no later than mid-June and work a M/W/F schedule for eight weeks or a T/Th schedule for twelve weeks, for a maximum of 200 hours total. The hours can be structured to work in conjunction with other internships or work opportunities.
Qualifications
Successful applicants should:
• Understand what copyediting is and what a copyeditor does. Before applying, please check out some books on the profession, such as Karen Judd’s Copyediting or Amy Einsohn’s The Copyeditor’s Handbook.
• Brush up on some copyediting skills—the books mentioned above are one place to start, but there are many style and usage manuals that are good resources: Chicago Manual of Style, Gregg Reference Manual, Words into Type, Garner’s Modern American Usage (or the newer Modern English Usage), etc.
• Be pursuing an undergraduate degree and currently enrolled in a four-year college
• Be a rising college senior at the beginning of the internship
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Please submit a resume and a 300-word personal statement outlining your interest, demonstrating your current level of expertise and your capacity to learn, and detailing how you would benefit from this opportunity. The essay can be attached electronically as an additional document.
If selected for consideration, you will be required to complete a short copyediting exercise to demonstrate aptitude as well as participate in an interview—in person or via phone, Skype, or Google Hangout.
Applications must be received no later than April 15.
