Overview
Director, Opinion & Community Engagement
The Morning Call in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley is looking for a digitally focused leader for our editorial and opinion content, making it a hub of conversation and ideas in this diverse and rapidly changing community.
The Director of Opinion/Community Engagement will engage the community through social media and public forums and work to solicit commentary from a wide range of voices outside the newsroom. This person will also establish best practices for engaging and interacting with our readers, and help to train the newsroom to implement them.
Responsibilities
• Initiates and enhances conversation with the community through social media, public forums and commentary written by staff, community members or other content partners.
• Works with staff to take full advantage of opinion content (including letters to the editor) to drive digital subscriptions and keep audiences engaged.
• Performs community outreach to ensure a constant flow of compelling and relevant guest columnists.
• Collaborates with the other content teams in newsroom to identify and recruit contributing voices in real time on trending/important topics.
• Convenes meetings with key stakeholders on topics of public interest, public officials and candidates for office.
• Establishes best practices for engaging/interacting with readers, and trains content teams to deploy them.
• Provides connections for our subscribers to hear their concerns addressed through member-only Facebook groups and community advisory boards.
• Edits opinion content.
• Serves as a company representative/ambassador to the public.
Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
• At least 10 years’ experience in journalism. Newsroom management experience a plus.
• Expertise in digital publishing, social media and audience engagement a must.
• Demonstrated skill and experience in news decision-making and ability to identify content of high interest to digital audience.
• Strong leadership skills. Works effectively under pressure, manages conflict, solicits ideas and opinions. Possesses strong communication skills. Can juggle long- and short-term priorities.
• Has knowledge of libel, privacy and related laws; able to apply newspaper style, enforce accuracy in copy.
• Has sense of community issues, history and needs of readers.
