Description
The Science Writer pitches, writes, and produces stories in a fast-paced digital newsroom, providing breaking news updates and valuable context about science and its impacts on our daily lives. This can include brief news reports based on new journal studies, explanations of the science behind current events, and short reported stories to accompany galleries, videos, and infographics. The writer will also have opportunities to work on deeper features, and will have a voice as part of the Science & Innovation team on developing editorial strategy around breaking news and long-range priorities. The role will involve working closely with colleagues on our Photo and Social desks as well as our Explorers, National Geographic magazine, Channel, and Books to find original story ideas and support organization-wide projects. This role is for an energetic self-starter who can help us break news, find story angles that no one else has, and experiment with new storytelling formats as we make National Geographic’s Science & Innovation coverage more competitive and relevant in the digital space.
Responsibilities
• Pitch, write, and produce daily stories, photo essays, video captions—plus occasional enterprise pieces—on science news, with a focus on astronomy, paleontology, archaeology, technology, genetics, and human behavior.
• Work closely with Audience Development, SEO, and Insights & Analytics teams to produce stories that connect with big audiences and deepen audience loyalty.
• Work closely with National Geographic magazine, Channel, Books, and our archives to identify content for digital opportunities.
• Collaborate with video, photo, graphics, Speed Desk, and other teams to tell visual stories.
• Closely track performance of content to constantly refine sense of what’s working and what’s not and what we should be experimenting with, from story selection to framing to presentation.
• Zealously use social and broadcast media platforms to raise your profile—and ours.
Qualifications
• Undergraduate degree in Journalism or a Science and 3-5 years of working experience covering science news OR 5-10 years of working experience covering science news.
• Familiarity with statistics and scientific methods; high reading comprehension; strong writing skills.
• Familiarity with MS Office products, website analytics, social media, and web production.
• Strong collaborative skills; experience with multimedia.
