Overview

The Publicity Manager develops and executes publicity campaigns, secures media coverage, and manages external PR firms for assigned campaigns.
Responsibilities
• Actively develop and maintain media contacts, including national, regional, local, and online.
• Write press releases and pitch emails/letters, and other promotional materials relating to a book’s and/or related e-course’s campaign.
• Pitch author/titles and digital learning (e-courses) products to radio, online, and TV.
• Organize and complete press mailings as required
• Connect media outreach and publicity opportunities to social media and email list growth.
• Continuously research new outlets, including podcasts and bloggers, for possible coverage.
• Create sell sheets, sales team updates, sales presentations, and sales conference materials.
• Research, negotiate with, and manage outside publicity firms as needed for certain projects.
• Work closely with sales to communicate media opportunities as well as collect input on media most advantageous to their accounts.
• Identify news-of-the-day/opportunities into which our authors/books or course instructors may be inserted and thus exposed to consumers via various media outlets and craft pitches appropriate for each outlet.
• Become a resource on which producers, editors, writers, and reporters depend for information, sources, books authors and course leaders on relevant topics.
• Schedule and attends author/course leader media tours.
• Leverage social media to create awareness and buzz around book releases, both with major traditional media outlets and bloggers.
• Manage the publicity budget and coordinate the activities of other personnel involved in each project.
• Develop individual, targeted publicity campaigns for each frontlist title and e-courses and set measurable goals for success.
• Speak into projects early in development to help determine potential for success based on author/course leader platform, likely media interest, and opportunities for exclusive content.
Qualifications
Knowledge:Working knowledge of crafting and delivering professional pitches to media outlets with at least two years’ experience pitching to national media. 2+ years’ experience in publishing or entertainment publicity preferred. Knowledge of media contact and engagement platforms, such as Cision.
Work Experience:5+ years working in public relations field.
Education:Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on public relations, marketing, communications, advertising, or related field.
Industry Knowledge:Keen understanding of publicity and its function is required. Established media contacts at general market media outlets. Book publishing and/or digital content-related publicity experience preferred.
