Overview
HarperCollins Leadership offers integrated, values-based development experiences through books, e-courses, podcasts, and web-based tools to help emerging and established leaders learn and apply the principles in order to activate the leadership potential inherent in every individual. The Editor oversees assigned projects from copyedited manuscript and training content through production of the final product. The Editor may also handle substantive edits as assigned.
Responsibilities
• Manage multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality control and tight production schedules.
• Copyedit, proofread, collate, and route cover copy, catalog copy, cover mechanicals, and other materials related to the editorial process of our books and training content.
• Collate and check proofs; copyedit and proofread miscellaneous material (e.g., front matter, back matter, indexes) and flap copy, mechanicals, proofs and training content.
• Recruit and hire freelance work-for-hire writers, copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers and oversee their work.
• Perform substantive and developmental editorial work on select titles.
• Maintain provided budgets for editorial expenses (writers, copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers, typesetters), and code and route invoices and SOWs for work performed.
• Work with authors and agents to secure permissions and releases and to obtain approval for text design, copyediting, cover design, and cover text.
• Develop excellent working relationships with other editorial staff.
• Utilize Excel, MS Word, Word styles tagging, and Harper’s proprietary software; code and update electronic manuscripts for typesetting and design; make changes as needed between passes.
• Draft back cover copy, catalog copy, and other marketing copy as needed.
• Attend and contribute to titling meetings and production meetings.
Qualifications
Knowledge:Thorough knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
Work Experience:At least four years editorial experience and preferably in the book publishing industry. Copyediting and proofreading experience.
Education:Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field
Industry Knowledge:Keeps up with trends in the publishing industry by reading trade magazines, such as Publisher’s Weekly
Skills:
• Ability to handle many projects at once in various stages of completion.
• Detail oriented.
• Well-versed at copyediting and proofreading.
• Ability to learn new systems quickly for editing and design.
• Eagle-eyed at catching errors.
• Good judgment regarding when to make a change and when to move something upline for approval.
• Excellent at spelling and grammar.
• Clear communicator.
• Proven project management and organizational skills.
• Intermediate or higher skill set of Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Word.
