OVERVIEW:
Miller Theatre at Columbia University is one of New York City's most acclaimed performing arts venues, widely celebrated for its innovative programming and its success building new audiences for the arts. A four-time recipient of the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming, Miller Theatre has helped launch the careers of myriad composers and ensembles by pioneering unique approaches to programming, from its signature Composer Portraits series to free onstage Pop-Up Concerts. Miller presents a season of professional performances on the Columbia campus each year, with a focus on contemporary music, multimedia projects, jazz, and early music.
Reporting to the Director of Production and Operations, the incumbent supports production planning and operations for events at Miller Theatre at Columbia University. Serves as the Miller management representative at assigned events, attends production meetings, oversees production activity during rehearsals and events, and ensures production and customer service standards are met. Oversees stage systems and equipment; maintains up-to-date working knowledge of audio, film, video, lighting, and rigging systems. Participates in the accurate maintenance of schedule and production reporting in the event database. Performs related duties as assigned. This position requires frequent evening and weekend hours, and may be assigned to other venues as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintains high quality customer service for Miller Theatre's diverse audiences, performers, students, faculty, and staff; fosters an environment that enables everyone to do their best work
• Shares responsibility for officer staff coverage at all performances, with frequent evening and weekend hours
• Anticipates and meets the technical and production needs of performances and events, recognizing and resolving problems in a timely manner, and advising on best practices and venue policies
• Supervises stage and technical crew, participates as needed in deliveries, load-in, setup and breakdown of events
• Oversees the general maintenance and safe operation of theater and production equipment; maintains an accurate inventory of Theatre equipment; researches and makes recommendations on repairs and replacements
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Miler Theatre emergency procedures and safety guidelines
• Oversees venue lock-up and security procedures
• Participates in the accurate maintenance of schedule and production information in event database; may be asked to produce reports from this database with point-in-time or year over year analysis
• As a member of the building’s operations team, ensures that the appearance and general condition of the lobby, restrooms, theater, and other spaces are appropriate
• Liaison with Columbia Facilities and Custodial, as well as with other University departments as assigned
• Certified as NYC Fire Guard for Miller Theatre
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Two to four years' related professional experience is required.
• Familiarity with audio, film, video, lighting, CAD, and rigging is strongly preferred.
• Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of producing academic and performing arts events.
• Must be highly organized, flexible, and able to balance multiple competing demands.
• Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, judgment and initiative.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
• Ability to work nights and weekends is a must.
