Job Description
The page designer is part of a team that will lay out and produce the daily news sections of The Wall Street Journal. The page designer will report to the deputy design chief for news and under guidance of an art director will produce visually and journalistically compelling layouts and content for breaking stories and news features. Multiple positions are available for both full-time and part-time.
Duties
• Stays on top of the news schedule and WSJ priorities throughout the day.
• Reviews advertising layouts and helps develop a visual plan for each story.
• Works closely with an art director to determine how best to tell stories visually and prioritize how to display stories.
• Follows through to completion all assignments.
• Produces creative layouts and presentation of stories within the boundaries of established styles and design.
• Takes daily assignments and effectively balances competing priorities and manages time to meet strict edition deadlines.
• Clearly communicates to art director needs and alerts with potential issues
• Assists other team members with their assignments.
• Adheres to and respects established styles.
• Delivers pages that reflect the high journalistic standards of the WSJ.
• Fills in for art director when needed.
Skills and Qualifications
• One to five years experience of news layout
• A passion for journalism and excellent news judgement
• Must have good and demonstrable design and typography skills
• Flexibility to work with both Macintosh and PC operating systems.
• An understanding of CSS and XML.
• Able to help reporters and editors understand best practices for visual storytelling.
• The initiative to take on and learn new tasks in a fast-moving environment.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience with business news and charting a bonus.
• Good knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices is a bonus.
• Software Requirements: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, G Suite, Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with EidosMedia’s Methode publishing system a plus.
• Work days will be Sunday-Thursday or Monday-Friday and nights will be required.
