Requirements
Position Description:
Imprint seeks a creative, dedicated editor to acquire or develop and edit approximately 15-20 titles per year across picture book, middle grade and young adult. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated passion for children’s and young adult publishing, a proven ability to work on a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment and key publishing or entertainment industry contacts (including authors and agents, licensors, film and TV). The candidate will demonstrate ability to work both within a collaborative team and independently on editorial tasks. We are specifically looking for someone with the ability to effectively liaise with members of other departments, including sales and marketing; to work quickly and competently; and to create dynamic home grown-ideas.
Major Responsibilities:
• Edit and manage 15-20 titles per year, a range of picture book, middle grade and young adult; working with all departments to supervise each step of the publishing process
◦ Develop 3-4 intellectual property titles a year: conceive character and story, plot and outline, source writers and collaborate to produce proposals, then see manuscripts through to publication
◦ Review submissions for acquisition
◦ Scout pop culture and the marketplace for new ideas and trends
• Build relationships with agents and other industry contacts; Maintain professional and responsive communication with authors and agents.
• Editorial reading, proofreading, editing, line editing.
• Write copy for sales materials, catalogs and book jackets.
• Effectively present titles at both internal and external sales meetings and previews, and represent Imprint within the industry.
Required Skills / Knowledge:
• Knows how to acquire and edit for a variety of formats and age groups from picture books to novels
• Basic understanding of P&L/other financial aspects of publishing
• Experience negotiating deals
• Awareness of the children’s publishing market
• Ability to prioritize, respond to shifting and fast-paced environment, and work independently
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Gmail and Apple computer platform
• Interest in Pop Culture and Media
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience Needed:
• Approximately 4-5 years editing experience and/or similar project management experience
• Relationships with agents, authors, entertainment and/or licensing contacts
Educational Background Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree
