Director of Finance
Hanley Wood is seeking a Director of Finance in Washington, DC. Under the direction of the company’s Vice President, Finance, and working closely with HW’s Chief Financial Officer and the President of Hanley Wood Media, Hanley Wood Media’s Director of Finance will partner with senior leadership to develop operating plans and implement business strategies which grow revenue and profit, optimize operating effectiveness, foster intercompany value-building, and produce accurate, transparent financial, statistical and trend reporting.
The Director will perform financial and operational analyses with particular focus on profitability, financial performance relative to plan, Digital product expansion, and Media portfolio optimization. S/he will generate, assemble, analyze, summarize, disseminate and make recommendations to senior management based on a variety of financial and statistical data to support actionable financial decision making and strategy.
The Director will have a deep understanding of Media’s entire product suite and liaise with colleagues across all functional areas to improve business systems and forecasting acumen, develop process efficiencies and optimize internal customer service experience.
Responsibilities
As the primary financial liaison for Hanley Wood Media, the Director of Finance will:
• Lead all financial planning, reporting and analysis processes, including the annual budget, interim financial projections, episodic revenue forecasts and strategic initiatives as assigned
• Interpret, prepare and present conclusions on financial performance and operating effectiveness for a variety of audiences, including senior executives and department heads
• Proactively identify and report financial and operating trends to senior leadership via financial, statistical, and ad hoc analyses, and conduct reviews with product owners
• Partner with department heads and senior leadership to:
◦ Develop, implement and monitor performance against the budget and strategic plans
◦ Enhance financial forecasting and operating protocol
◦ Research industry best practices and benchmark performance vs. peers
◦ Recommend corrective financial and operational improvements as necessary
◦ Document critical operational processes
• Lead creation of Media-related sales and management incentive programs
• Represent Media’s accounting / finance department in a steering committee leadership role on key strategic projects, including:
◦ Evaluation of new enterprise / project management software
◦ Technology / capital investments and efficiency gains
• Actively participate in the month-end financial close process, to ensure compliance with GAAP and Hanley Wood accounting policies and accurate, timely financial statements
• Optimize use of existing financial reporting applications; evaluate then implement new solutions to increase level of automated, on-demand financial and statistical reporting
• Special projects as assigned
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting required; MBA, CPA, CFA and/or financial related masters degree a plus
• 7+ years of experience in accounting/finance with 3+ years in a financial leadership role
• Strong understanding of US GAAP accounting and revenue recognition rules
• Ability to review and interpret contracts to ensure proper recognition in accordance with US GAAP
• Understanding of cost accounting
• Media or entertainment industry experience preferred
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
• Knowledge of financial report writing packages; experience with TM1 (IBM/Cognos), Epicor and FRx a plus
• Outstanding interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, particularly with presenting complex and confrontational topics in a simplified manner
• Capability to explain financial concepts to non-finance personnel
• Strong process reengineering and process management skills
• Experience working with project management and collaboration systems
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, think strategically and critically, and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
• Exceptional analytic ability
