Description
Powerhouse Workshop is a contemporary arts center and art fabrication facility established to serve the needs of working artists. Scheduled to open in 2020, the Powerhouse Workshop will provide industrial fabrication shops, a materials library, and flexible space for exhibitions, installations and public programs—supporting investigation, experimentation, and collaboration across media and disciplines.
Powerhouse is seeking a Director of Operations to join the executive team and help lead the creation of a vibrant new cultural center. The Director of Operations will play a key role in shaping the future of the institution.
The Director of Operations will lead the operations team and report to the Executive Director and will be responsible for supporting the ongoing development of the Powerhouse operations. The role of the Director of Operations will evolve as the Powerhouse project develops. Candidates should be enthusiastic to participate in this “start-up” environment and should be excited by the opportunity to shape and expand the responsibilities of the position. Areas of responsibility will include:
Facility operating/programming planning and implementation – Working with the executive team to define, develop and refine the longer-term business plan for the Powerhouse facility as well as more immediate responsibilities related to numerous interim workshops.
-Conducting research and managing consultants, as necessary, to develop the detailed
operating concepts and implementation for the facility, including but not limited to:
workshop and office facilities, exhibition programming, facility rental, retail, fundraising, and
overhead
-Modifying the operating plan and budget as necessary to reflect its relationship to the
building plan and programming plan as they develop
-Close coordination with the executive team on requirements to fulfill the programmatic
goals, including but not limited to: design review with a focus on space planning, public
safety, staffing, maintenance schedule and budget, and storage requirements
Systems Development and Management – Working with the executive team to establish
appropriate standardized and specialized procedures for management needs:
-Identifying and establishing contracts with outside vendors as needed
-Setting up protocols for purchasing, maintaining and replacing equipment
-Implementation and maintenance of risk management policies and procedures
-Research, design collaboration, and selection of technology, including but not limited to:
-Database of funders, artists, employees, students, members, clients, etc.;
-Electronic security and access systems; and
-Systems for tracking and billing time of employees and members.
Team building – Working with the executive team on planning related to staffing of operations for the Powerhouse facility.
-Developing and vetting staffing plans.
-Overseeing hiring and training of team members.
-Overseeing the development, implementation and tracking of employee policies and
procedures.
Qualifications
-Senior management experience in institutions with 100+ employees
-Experience working in a not-for-profit environment
-Flexible, creative, resourceful, and able to solve problems
-10+ years of experience in operations, facilities management, or related field
-Experience working with artists, galleries, and/or fabricators
-Qualified candidates of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply
