Job Summary: The Medical Literacy Editor/ Copy Editor is responsible for editing patient education documents to comply with health literacy and plain language principles as outlined in the Patient Engagement Editorial Guidelines. The editor will work with internal and external subject matter experts to ensure all content is clinically accurate and complete. This person is also responsible for copyediting patient education to ensure it is error-free prior to publication.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Edit patient education materials for grammar, punctuation, and usage, while also applying plain language edits to create clear, easy-to-understand, and actionable content. Edit documents to meet reading level requirements using the Flesch-Kincaid scoring system.
• Collaborate with Clinical Editors and subject matter experts to ensure documents are medically accurate after applying plain language edits. Query clinical subject matter experts if information supplied needs clarification or further explanation.
• Meet deliverable deadlines by planning and prioritizing projects as assigned; collaborate with other team members to complete projects.
• Keep up-to-date with health literacy principles and apply plain language strategies while editing patient education.
• Support the maintenance of internal guideline documents, including the standard language reference, resource guidelines, image guidelines, and internal house style guide.
• Copyedit content to ensure no spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors get published; copyedit graphic call-outs for correct spelling.
• Copyedit content for RFPs and content package requests for on-time delivery.
Skills required:
• Baccalaureate Degree in English, journalism, communication, or related field; minimum of 2 years of professional editing experience, preferably in health education.
• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, adjust priorities, and work simultaneously on multiple projects to complete quality patient education by set deadlines.
• Experience taking technical/medical information and translating it into plain language.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent command of the English language in both spoken and written forms.
• Self-motivated and able to work with limited guidance/supervision as well as able to work collaboratively with a team in a geographically dispersed environment.
• Technical knowledge: Basic computer skills; MS Office applications; experience with content management systems.
