WGBH News seeks to inform, educate and enlighten our audience on both the news of the day and the news in historical context through in-depth, high quality journalism using the best tools and methods of the craft. WGBH News seeks always to report on and facilitate discussion of the news with integrity, fairness, balance, accuracy and civility. We also also seek to tell the stories of and allow expression of the diversity of voices that make up our entire community.
Position Overview
WGBH News is looking for an experienced audience engagement editor to manage our social media accounts across a number of programs, lead the implementation of our social media strategy and broaden the reach and impact of our radio, television and written stories. This person will play a key role in five main areas: 1) growing our social media audience 2) cultivating active communities that engage with our various area of coverage 3) creating compelling, original content for social media that connects our audiences to our journalism 4) training staff and 5) keeping track of key performance indicators. This person may also need to step in to help produce and write content for the website.
Responsibilities:
1) Grow WGBH News’ social media audience on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Work with newsroom shows and desks (BPR, Greater Boston, Forum Network, K-12 desk, etc.) to create a social media strategy tailored to their audience.
2) Produce social content, including video, images, GIFs, and emerging platform content such as 360 video or live streams.
3) Create and execute engagement and audience development initiatives, ranging from hashtag campaigns, social ad campaigns, Twitter chats, Reddit AMAs, Facebook Live interviews, and facilitating social media “takeovers.”
4) Identify key players in the New England news and media landscape, and engage with them on social media. Use social media to develop sources and story ideas.
5) Write social copy, optimized for each platform.
6) Train newsroom staff on social media best practices, how to use our main publishing platform and the latest social media trends.
7) Write eye-catching, accurate headlines.
8) Respond to inquiries and comments on social channels. Moderate comments to ensure discussions, particularly on Facebook, are informative.
9) Find and report stories of interest to WGBH News’ digital audience. Help increase the diversity of WGBH News’ audiences by sharing content with networks and communities that are under-represented in media.
10) Collaborate with newsroom colleagues to bring digital stories to radio/TV and radio/TV stories to digital.
11) Monitor key analytics.
Skills Required
1) Four or more years social media experience.
2) Proven track record of leveraging social media platforms to drive editorial objectives.
3) Outstanding news judgment. Familiarity with journalism, newsroom, ethics, vetting information quickly in a breaking news situation and rights to media elements/clearing media elements for use.
4) Strong writing skills, ability to adapt writing style creatively to fit the voice of different platforms.
5) In-depth knowledge of the latest social media best practices, tools and trends.
6) Ability to consistently produce results under pressure in a fast-paced environment both as an individual contributor, as well as an individual in a team environment.
7) Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
8) Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.
9) Ability to copy edit under tight deadlines.
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree required.
