POSITION OVERVIEW
OPERA America, the national nonprofit service organization for opera, headquartered at the National Opera Center in midtown New York City, seeks a Research Manager to support our mission-driven initiatives.
OPERA America maintains a unique capacity to harness the power of data and field intelligence for the benefit of member companies and their work in communities across the country. Research is a crucial part of OPERA America’s service to its members, and includes the following:
• Customized data analysis for members, academics and the press.
• Benchmarking reports, including financial/operational, repertoire and staffing analysis.
• Advocacy materials, including education and community engagement stories.
• The annual Professional Opera Survey study documenting the financial health of the opera field.
• Studies on topics of strategic significance to the field, (e.g. gender balance in leadership positions.)
POSITION SUMMARY
The Research Manager reports to the Director of Finance and Operations and works closely with the President/CEO and departmental directors. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Member liaison: Build relationships with members to encourage survey participation and the use of research findings. Serve as a primary contact for member requests for assistance and/or information.
• Data collation and interpretation: Review and clean data submitted by members. Investigate outliers and document learning. Prepare narrative reports and supporting graphics, as appropriate. Work with other OA staff to publish reports, as appropriate.
• Survey administration and reporting: Design/adapt research instruments and methodology as well as analytic frameworks and report formats. Track responses to surveys and work with other OA staff to ensure high rates of participation.
• Project management: Plan, schedule, manage and monitor research projects.
• Knowledge continuity. Assess, organization and improve access to historic field data and information. Identify gaps in data/information and develop strategies to close such gaps. Increase understanding of the use of research across the field.
• Partner relationships. Maintain current relationships with research partners and develop new relationships that build OPERA America’s research capacity.
• Events: Represent OPERA America’s research agenda at conferences and other events.
• Systems. Assess and recommend improvements to OPERA America’s data collection platforms on a regular basis.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Proven data management skills. Facility with Excel and SQL is required
• Experience in online survey design and administration.
• Excellent writing and telephone skills, including the ability to communication research objectives and findings to non-specialists.
• Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
• Ability to manage several projects concurrently.
• Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of professional experience
• Opera knowledge and experience in library administration are preferred.

Over the past 25 years, the organization has awarded nearly $13 million in grants to develop new operas and music-theater works, foster innovative opera productions, engage audiences for opera, and increase diversity across the field. In addition, OPERA America provides travel grants that allow members to participate in Network Forums and attend performances of new North American works.
POSITION DETAILS: Full-Time/Exempt. Salary up to $50,000. OPERA America provides health benefits, a pension package, paid vacation and life insurance to all full-time employees.
