The Atlantic is a digital-first media company with over 150 years of history and millions of online visitors a month. Founded in 1857 and today one of the fastest-growing media platforms in the industry, The Atlantic has throughout its history championed the power of big ideas and continues to shape global debate through our two websites: TheAtlantic.com and CityLab.com. We work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment out of our office in the historic Watergate complex in Washington DC.
What is a Revenue Team?
A new part of the Product Team focused on one of the hardest problems on the Internet: how do we help our sales and marketing teams fund journalism in ways that provide a world-class reader experience? You can read about our first initiative, custom ad formats that look great while meeting strict performance and user experience standards, on our blog: The Case for Bespoke Advertising.
Who You Are
You are a talented web developer, a creative problem-solver, and solid communicator with an interest in journalism and the media business. You may not be a designer, but you can improvise a prototype in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that looks and feels good. You care about quality and can help push our products to be faster and sleeker. You're looking for a place where you can grow as a developer, learn new programming techniques and pickup best practices for building high quality, maintainable web products.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Help invent new ad templates and revenue products that support our journalism and keep the site fast
• Build tools for promoting our own brand and products to our readers
• Collaborate with multiple teams to figure out what they need and what we should build to help them
• Implement and deploy new features and tools for TheAtlantic.com and CityLab.com where they will be viewed by millions of people
Requirements:
• Can build and maintain complex, responsive features in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript without a framework (We do use Gulp, Sass, ES6, and other modern tooling)
• Strong technical and non-technical communication skills
• Comfortable with Git for version control
• Ready to learn and apply new technologies as needed (including Python)
Atlantic Media Values:
Across Atlantic Media, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in you, and everyone else. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions –
• Force of Ideas:At the center of Atlantic Media work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual integrity, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, and giving voice to the latter.
• Spirit of Generosity:Atlantic Media seeks in its ranks those with natural disposition toward service and selfless conduct. Atlantic Media writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits, but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
Atlantic Media is an EOE of Minorities/Women/Vets/Disability.
