The Digital Media Design Group researches, prototypes, and designs user experiences for the public across the places they are and will be—websites, smartphones, tablets, connected cars, connected homes, wearables, smart speakers and places we haven't yet imagined.
As our Design Technologist Intern, you will primarily be responsible for helping our project teams build prototypes that push our digital products forward. Partnering closely with members of the design and development groups, you will identify pain points and answer them with process improvements. You will actively participate in the ideation and creation of new design tools for our team and make recommendations for the future of design technology at NPR.
Our ideal candidate is comfortable working as a hybrid designer/developer and using concepts from both practices to solve micro-and macro-level design problems. This candidate should be comfortable or familiar with a wide range of commercial design tools and should feel right at home in Atom (or the IDE of their choice). They should have a good understanding or a curiosity to learn more about various platforms and technologies (HTML/CSS/Javascript, Python, C++, etc.) to create functional tools, prototypes and proofs-of-concept. They should be equally proficient in thinking about user experiences from a product design and development point of view.
In this role, you will..
• Work with designers and developers across project teams to make flat comps come to life.
• Quickly build and iterate on high-fidelity prototypes that convey a clear and polished design direction.
• Participate in the creation and maintenance of in-house design tools and processes that help designers work more efficiently with developers.
• Facilitate design thinking exercises with cross-functional teams and execute your findings.
Possible Projects
NPR-built Station Sites Beta
• Work alongside designers, developers and product owners to get a sense of what it’s like to work day-to-day on a mission-critical project at NPR.
• Influence the future of member-station content on national platforms.
NPR News
• Help determine and document the ideal tool set for designing micro-interactions, animations and polish-level improvements for NPR’s flagship mobile application.
• Work with our first-class team of mobile developers to ensure that our design deliverables translate well to code.
Design Tools
• Develop a build-system for color management across digital platforms.
• Work with a team that is in the process of building a React-based component library for editorial tools for NPR and member stations.
• Develop and document boilerplate code and best practices for building things like Sketch and Figma plugins, asset pipelines and design systems.
