About the Museum
The Queens Museum is dedicated to presenting the highest quality visual arts and educational programming for people in New York City and particularly for residents of Queens, a uniquely diverse ethnic, cultural and international community. The Museum presents artistic and educational programs and exhibitions that directly relate to the contemporary urban life of its constituents while maintaining the highest standards of professional, intellectual and ethical responsibility.
About the Position
The Queens Museum’s Out-of-School (OST) and Family Programs Manager conceives, implements, manages and assesses a diverse range of gallery, studio, school and community-based programs that are closely integrated with the Museum’s diverse range of permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as other artist and community projects. In this work, the Educator is responsible for engaging two key audiences with an emphasis on the diverse communities of Queens:
Children and youth in grades Pre-K to 12 and young adults (generally 18-21) during out of school hours i.e. experiences that take place outside of the traditional school day and curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to, after-school, weekends and summer.
Families (adult caregivers and children aged 0-12).
Responsibilities
Serve as the lead educator and mentor for Queens Teens, the museum’s nationally recognized youth leadership and apprenticeship program. Being responsible for recruitment, planning, facilitating workshops, overseeing youth work assignments and generally being responsible for ensuring positive student experiences. QT serves 25-30 youth annually in school year-long apprenticeships at the Museum.
Promote and expand teen participation, engagement and leadership at the Museum through other programs events, partnerships and other initiatives.
Oversee school-based after school programs such as the Cultural After-School Adventures Program
In collaboration with the Manage for School Programs, oversee after-school art programs aimed at middle school youth supported by the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.
In collaboration with school and community personnel, oversee outreach to recruit program participants.
Plan and manage the Big Time Summer Art Thing for kids, the museum’s popular annual summer art camp aimed at children aged 4-12.
In collaboration with the Manager of School Programs, manage the QM Summer Youth Arts Project, a new summer arts intensive aimed at middle school youth in Queens supported by the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.
Integrate a wide spectrum of families into the museum, focusing on diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds and children with differing needs and abilities through programs that encourage adults and children to learn, explore and socialize together.
Plan workshops and write text for the quarterly brochure for the Museum’s weekly Family Drop-in Art Workshop
Overseeing, planning and leading the Museum’s weekly Family Drop-in Art Workshop, the Museum’s art workshop for children aged 3-12 and their families.
Edit the quarterly Family Programs brochure and coordinate timely publications with the Communications Department
Overseeing, planning and teaching periodic public events and programs aimed at families e.g. Second Sundays for Families, our Annual Cool Culture Festival, Passport Thursdays.
Act as a senior museum educator and teaching artist within the Museum’s education department, teaching across school youth and family programs as necessary.
Support and sometimes plan and lead professional development and training for teaching artists and teens as well as for and with outside audiences.
Work with the education director and communications director to continually expand the museum’s visibility among diverse youth and family audiences in Queens.
Participate in and support teaching artists and educators in ongoing research, evaluation and documentation efforts.
Staff artists and educators as necessary for different programs and events.
Ordering and managing supplies for family programs, after-school, camps and teen program
Supporting the Development Department in grant writing and reporting Support other administrative duties on behalf of the education department as necessary.
Performing other duties as necessary and appropriate.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to the Queens Museum’s mission and values, particularly openness, inclusion, community partnership and community empowerment. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:
A record of success thriving in culturally diverse settings.
Strong background promoting youth development and youth leadership in arts/cultural settings.
Successful experience managing, developing and leading hands-on arts activities for diverse families with young children, particularly children 0-12.
A studio art/visual arts background is strongly preferred. Demonstrated expertise/knowledge in visual arts, design and/or art history is required.
Detail-oriented and organized.
Ability to plan and implement complex programs, from start to evaluation
Museum education experience is a strong plus, particularly a record of success with community-based art projects and promoting visual literacy and inquiry in gallery settings.
Fiscal responsibility
Experience hiring, training and mentoring diverse teams of museum educators and teaching artists
Record of collaboration with outstanding interpersonal skills
Desire to grow and learn through the work.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required. Ideally in an arts, culture, or education-related field.
A minimum of four years successful experience in arts or museum education, working with youth and/or families in school, community or cultural settings.
Bilingual Spanish is a very strong plus.
Note: Regular weekend work is required as well as occasional evening work
Must be willing to travel to school and community locations throughout Queens as necessary.
