Description
The Arts Administration program (ARAD) at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking an entrepreneurially-minded, motivated part-time Professional Development Coordinator (PDC) to advance its professional development program. Reporting to the Program Manager, the PDC is responsible for the implementation of the required internship for the M.A. degree, which includes organizing professional development events for students in collaboration with internal and external arts and culture professionals.
In addition, the PDC advises students on areas of individual interest, as well as navigating the application process, registration, and the internship experience. The PDC also creates and maintains systems to track and evaluate program effectiveness.
The PDC is responsible for advocating for the students’ professional growth in line with Department of Labor guidelines and ensuring the applicability of the field experience to ARAD academics. While the program does not place students in internships, the PDC develops and maintains ongoing communications with organizations and alumni to facilitate potential opportunities. To that end, the PDC organizes and executes an annual arts administration internship fair, as well as the Distinguished Speakers Series and Microcourses.
Professional Development Coordinator responsibilities include:
Internship Program
-Collaborate with students to strategize internship placements and career pursuits
-Advise students on developing strong internship/job application materials (resume, cover letter, etc.) and guide them through the interview process
-Facilitate the internship registration process
-Monitor internships through established tracking systems
-Manage the internship database
-Site visits with students and host organizations
-Organize the annual Arts Administration Internship Fair and other related professional development events
-Organize and execute the Distinguished Speaker Series and Microcourse events
-Create and maintain internship program evaluation systems
-Facilitate student visa paperwork with regard to paid internships and employment,
-At students' request, provide professional assessments of internship fit and readiness (e.g., recommendation letters)
Relationship Building
-Under the guidance of faculty and the program manager, develop a robust pipeline of internship and programmatic opportunities with targeted arts organizations
-Be an active member in the art administration/internship community, attend related events, etc.
Career Services
-Build relationships and collaborate with Career Services and include their participation in programming where appropriate
Other projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
-Excellent written and oral communication skills
-Excellent organizational and time management skills
-Event planning experience
-Familiarity with NYC and regional, national and international arts and culture institutions
-Entrepreneurial outlook and desire to continuously improve the internship program experience
-Proficiency in the Google suite of applications (Docs, Slides, Sheets) and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint),
Preferred Qualifications
-Knowledge of higher education environment
-Knowledge of international student visa issues
-Network of contacts at NYC and regional cultural institutions
-Experience developing professional development programs
Salary & Time Commitment
This is a part-time (20 hours/week) position that pays $20/hour.
