Designer - RHCB
Random House Children’s Books is looking for a highly motivated designer to join their team. The Designer is responsible for the design and execution of book interiors and jackets for in the children’s trade group. This position handles all phases of design from concept through mechanicals to final production, in a variety of illustrated formats, with an emphasis on middle grade fiction and non-fiction.
Specifically, the Designer:
1.Responsible for the effective, high-quality design of novels and nonfiction titles from concept to final art using creativity, resourcefulness, and understanding of goals.
2.Creates visual concepts, cover compositions, and interior layouts utilizing strong typography and design skills for individual titles and across series.
3.Collaborates with the editorial department to develop ideas and with the production department to achieve desired effects for the final book package; ensures that book designs are aligned with sales and marketing goals.
4.Communicates in an effective, professional, and courteous manner with supervisor, team, other departments, and outside agencies.
5.Monitors design budgets and maintains schedules for each assigned title.
6.Researches and hires illustrators, photographers, and stockphoto sites; negotiates contracts with artists/agencies.
7.Reads assigned manuscripts and reviews author’s previously published work to gain familiarity with subject matter.
8.Meets deadlines by managing routing passes.
9.Attends status meetings and weekly team meetings prepared with printed materials such as cover concepts, sample layouts, schedules, and artist/design research
10.Prepares approved jacket and interior files for production based on pre-press and printing standards.
11.Provides jacket files and digital images for promotional use in print and online.
12.Performs other related projects or duties as assigned or required.
13.Works with supervisor to develop any necessary new systems and processes.
14.Maintains working knowledge of industry trends.
Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:
•4 year college degree/BFA /art and technical studies a plus
•3-5 years of experience, preferably in publishing
•Evidence of effective, conceptual thinking in a portfolio of successful book covers, interior design and other graphic design work.
•Excellent knowledge of typography
•Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task and coordinate workload
•Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
•Proficiency on Mac software, including a mastery of Adobe CC programs: InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
•Knowledge of MS office programs.

• Strong attention to detail, quality and process.
• Exceptional professional written and oral communication skills.
• Willingness to take on responsibilities and demonstrates an ability to ask for support or help.
• Hardworking, self-starting and collaborative.
• Genuine passion for children’s books, illustration and typography.
• Knowledge of children’s bestsellers, trends and illustrators, with an emphasis on the middle grade market.
