Purpose of the Job
This role is part of the Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) Publishing Organisation. In total STMJ consists of approximately 660fte based from offices in the UK, USA, The Netherlands, China and India. It is responsible for publishing over 1800 journal titles (24% of the global market), with new journal launches and society contract acquisitions ensuring annual growth. There are 3 vertical publishing units: Life Sciences & Social Sciences, Physical Sciences and Health & Medical Sciences, headed up by a SVP. Each unit has 5 to 8 scientific/specialty areas, headed up by a Publishing Director, and is responsible for the strategic approach to their specific audiences which consist of, amongst others, authors, editors, researchers and societies etc.
The Senior Publisher delivers realization and business plans aiming at the development and maintenance of a journals portfolio or defined list of particular journals within a delegated scientific/specialty area(s), in line with the strategy, plans and global objectives at STMJ level. The role manages and develops an assigned portfolio of journal titles and related products and services on a complex level, demonstrates the ability to work independently and has a focus on being a lead example to and a mentor for Publishers and Associate Publishers.
Main Activities and Responsibilities
• Portfolio development, Acquisition, Non-subscription revenue, contracts & Society liaison (30%) - Overseeing the overall portfolio management, including development of non-subscriptional commercial opportunities. Overseeing and where necessary guiding negotiation of editorial and title contracts.
• Network and relationship management & development. (30%) - Make an immediate impact and build and maintain a strong network both with, and beyond, current Elsevier editors, authors and societies; develop a strong connection/affiliation with scientific and medical community and associated stakeholders such as funding bodies. Can contribute to complex industry discussions with university/research industry stakeholders.
• Content Development (30%) - Has overall responsibility for the journal product portfolio with emphasis on content growth and quality strategy. Managing content growth organically and by (title) acquisition as well as managing innovation of content formats and content extensions and channels
• Ad hoc projects (10%) - Participate in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation. This could be relevant for the particular department, related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization.

• PhD / Academic degree
• 4 - 6 years relevant Science/Technical/Medical publishing experience
• Proven track record of full awareness, application and remaining up to date on Technology, Social Media and content enhancement in that context.
• Experience in working in a complex, matrix international environment
• Willingness to travel at least 30% of time is a requirement.
