Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) is the centralized U.S. catalog entity for the Universal Music Group. The UMe catalog roster includes many of the most iconic and legendary artists of all time, including: The Beatles, Bob Marley, The Rolling Stones, Eminem, Stevie Wonder, Nirvana, and Kanye West.
We are seeking a passionate music enthusiast with Product Development experience and strong music business background to join our catalog Product Development team as the Director of Product Development. This role reports to the VP, Product Development and is based in Santa Monica, CA.
Job Functions:
• Research, pitch and produce financially & commercially viable physical and digital releases from the Universal Music Group catalog across all artists
• Manage & coordinate full product development lifecycle, from research to recording/production process to product release
• Interact with executives across departments, artists and artist management.
• Identify repertoire for commercial exploitation through archive research and asset management
• Oversee and be accountable for project expenditures & budgets
• Seek out and identify new potential catalog content and releases for possible acquisition, and effectively assist in the deal evaluation
• Provide efficient and effective research data on a variety of songs, artists and genres
• Work with Commercial and Marketing teams on content creation, which can include videos, editorial, streaming playlist strategy and curation
• Maintain strict quality control of products & releases
Job Requirements:
Skills/Abilities:
• Must have broad & in-depth knowledge of music genres and music products and strong understanding of the music industry & recording methods and technology.
• Passionate about music and emerging media trends.
• Multi-tasking, with meticulous attention to detail, understanding priorities and being able to work well under pressure & deadlines in a fast-paced, high volume environment.
• Must demonstrate poise, confidence, and talent to handle multiple projects with the highest level of quality and integrity.
• Foster and maintain strong, positive relationships with top level managers and artists.
• Work well both within a team and independently, take initiative, identify potential issues & successfully problem solve with sound business deliverables.
• Effectively optimize processes and efficiencies, and manage budgets.
• Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT), along with high aptitude for learning new software programs.
Experience:
• 7+ years’ experience in the music business, preferably with catalog/heritage music and knowledge of recording methods and technology
• Experience successfully managing Product Development and budget process for a product release from origination to product completion
• Proven track record initiating, originating, managing and successfully completing all relevant aspects of recorded music releases and projects
• Knowledge and experience in digital/streaming formats & platforms including playlist compilations, content curation, and algorithm optimization
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree required in music, marketing, communication, business, or related major preferred
