Pearson Education is seeking a highly motivated, passionate, driven, and experienced Software Development Manager with broad technical expertise, Agile practices history, extensive development experience and proven history managing teams of 8+ people. The Software Development Manager will manage a team of highly intelligent, productive, and skilled developers driving and contributing to Pearson’s Global API Platform.
The API Management team is responsible for Designing and Operationalizing the Apigee Edge and Microservices strategy. Apigee currently operates at 1,000,000 trx/hour across 5 geographic regions. In addition, this team is responsible for building a central community for Pearson developers, to allow free-flowing exchange of ideas and code. This person will be responsible for managing the delivery of these platforms and being a lead advocate for Pearson developers across the company.
Responsibilities
• Challenge the team to develop innovative products, technologies and processes that continuously push the envelope of Pearson’s rapid, reliable and repeatable attitude
• Be a positive leader, role model and mentor ensuring team members acquire necessary skills (technical and non-technical) and performance attributes, in line with business and personal development needs
• Identify and solve problems creatively with minimal guidance
• Manages personnel activities of software engineering staff including hiring, training, and yearly reviews
• Provide leadership and mentoring in creating a true DevOps, Agile, and Lean culture of professionalism, accountability, and delivery
• Serve as a liaison, development team representative and partner with internal customers including Product Managers, Project Managers, Engineers, and Systems Architects
• Provide oversight and guidance in the operational nuances that come with a department in a explosive growth phase
Qualifications
• Proven experience managing development teams of 8+ software engineers
• Experience leading, or working in, teams using Agile Software methodologies (Scrum/XP/Kanban/etc.)
• Immensely technical with the ability to communicate with developers and stakeholders in their languages
• Aptitude for mentoring and facilitating the change necessary to create self-organizing teams
• Deep commitment to learning and continuous improvement of development process
• Experience leading a culture change into an Agile and DevOps mindset
• Capable of self-direction that aligns with corporate and department vision
• Experience navigating large, complex projects, in a highly matrixed environment
• Working knowledge of technologies and concepts of API Platforms and Microservice Architectures
• Evangelize and promote API Platform strategies and progress to key Pearson stakeholders including senior leadership
• Foster alignment across many divisions of Pearson to promote cohesion and alignment in our Global API Platform strategy
