We are seeking an assistant to join the publishing leadership team. The position provides an opportunity to assist executive- and senior-level professionals in the Ten Speed Press office in California, with daily editorial, publishing development, business development, and marketing strategy activities, including general administrative duties and book project support. The assistant will spend 60% supporting editorial function, 20% supporting marketing strategy, and 20% supporting publishing management. The position will report to the editor in chief, who will coordinate the team’s work allocation and prioritization.
The ideal candidate will be able to efficiently and thoughtfully manage a diverse set of publishing responsibilities and adapt to different work styles and fluid reprioritization. The assistant must be a strong writer and proficient in Excel and Powerpoint. The candidate will also have an interest in illustrated nonfiction books in the categories in which we publish and will be creative, curious, collaborative, and have a sense of humor.
Additional requirements include:

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task successfully.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Specific tasks include, but not limited to:
EDITORIAL: 70%
• Drafting topsheets, title information sheets, key words, competitive title cover surveys, reader notebooks, copy for galleys/dummies/catalog/back cover
• Coding text for design
• Updating, copying, distributing spreadsheets
• Acquisitions meeting support (scheduling, agendas, materials)
• Acquitisions brainstorm support
• Updating title information sheets and sales copy periodically
• Taking notes in meetings
• Booking coders/copyeditors/proofreaders/indexers for specific titles
• Facilitating/managing blurb solicitation and editing approval process
• Checking corrections and reconciling
• Organzing materials for projects
• New idea/talent research and development support
• Generating contract-worker agreements
• Gathering materials for meetings, presentations, pitch packages
• Single-task work on book projects (shot list drafting, spell-checking names, re-ordering or reformatting text)
• Support work on Pub Director’s fast-tracked publishing
MARKETING STRATEGY: 15%
• Create and maintain reports
• Prepare materials for dept meetings
• Assist with author visit preparation and hosting
• Assist with catalogs
PUBLISHING MANAGEMENT: 15%
• Drafting slide decks for presentation
• Gather and distribute materials for meeting and presentations
• Coordinate scheduling of large meetings
