Requirements
Position Description:
Editorial Assistant—or, for the person with appropriate experience, Assistant Editor—to the publisher of a new imprint of FSG. We are small, highly collaborative team that publishes work across genres—from literary fiction to pop culture, with many stops in between—and formats. The primary responsibilities include reading and evaluating manuscripts, and (eventually) editing manuscripts that have been acquired; writing copy for book covers, catalogs, and the web; communicating regularly with authors; and generally helping to keep a pretty busy office running and organized.
Major Responsibilities:
• Coordinate all aspects of a high-volume, fast-paced editor’s desk
• Track manuscripts through production process
• Read and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts on submission
• Write flap copy, catalog copy, launch sheets and tip sheets, and help with online/social media copy
• Liaison between editorial and production, design, marketing, publicity, and sales departments
• Initiate and respond to correspondence with authors and agents at all stages of the publishing process
• Edit manuscripts
Required Skills / Knowledge:
• Widely read, and engaged with and passionate both literary and popular culture
• Strong written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills
• Confident editing skills—and an eagerness to learn
• Experienced at multi-tasking and working with a team
• Good organizational skills and attention to detail; Good follow-up skills
• Strong work ethic and initiative
• Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and work independently
Experience Needed:
• Prior publishing experience preferred
• Ideal candidate will be highly conversant in social media and the web, as well as standard office software
• Foreign language proficiency (primarily reading) a definite plus
