The role of Editor-in-Chief of Cell is a rare and unique opportunity to directly shape this iconic brand which in turn impacts the direction and future of biomedical science. This position is highly visible within the scientific community and the successful candidate will be a visionary for the journal grounded in a strong understanding of where biomedical research is and where it is heading and the needs of authors, readers, and reviewers with a vision for providing sustained value in the changing world of science and publishing. S/he will lead the team of internal professional editors responsible for inspiring, motivating and mentoring them and will work across all departments in Cell Press and Elsevier that contribute to the success of Cell including marketing, production, and technology. With a strong passion for science, high respect in the scientific community strong leadership, powerful communication skills, a commitment to excellence and a passion for evolving Cell, the EIC will be responsible for defining the future for one of the most prominent journals in biology all while continuing to build a strong network of leading researchers, recruiting exciting studies, and ensuring the quality and value of the journal as a forum for the best work across the breadth of biomedicine.
Main Activities and Responsibilities
Scientific Credibility
Representing Cell in all forums related to biomedical science and the scientific ecosystem particularly those related to publishing-peer review, rigor and reproducibility, incentives and credit, globalization, open science.
Editorial Viewpoint and Relationship Building
The Editor-in-Chief of Cell assumes overall responsibility for determining the journal’s scientific scope and editorial direction, as well as ensuring the quality of its cutting-edge research articles, reviews and editorials, as the leader of the editorial team. He/she will travel extensively to attend conferences and visit research institutions and will bring/build a broad network of domestic and international contacts. The Editor will also develop and foster partnerships internally with members of the broader editorial team, members of the production, marketing and advertising teams, and will contribute to the overall publishing strategy of Cell and Cell Press as a whole. Acts as a strong global ambassador for the journal, Cell Press and Elsevier.
Strategic Vision
Creates a vision for the journal as a product, including strong relevant scientific expertise in biomedicine or related fields but also the brand name. Must recognize the value of the journal as more than just a collection of articles. This includes realizing the value of the innovation, technology, financial sustainability, balance of review and research content. Appropriate candidates will have an appreciation for both the breadth and depth of Cell and an interest and curiosity about all areas of science.
Leadership
Inspires team, trains and mentors junior editors. Acts as a proactive and compelling communicator. As a leader this individual should be bold and willing to take risks. Leads by example and addresses conflicts head on.
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Doctoral degree and post-doctoral work in relevant areas. Interested applicants with a current academic appointment and research scientists who currently work in industry but are seeking new challenges in an editorial role are encouraged to apply. Previous editorial and/or management experience is strongly preferred. The key qualities include; breadth of scientific interest and curiosity, the ability to think conceptually and critically about a wide range of scientific issues, strong communication and interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and a penchant for teamwork. As a member of the editorial and scientific community, the Editor-in-Chief will also have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to bring/build a broad network of contacts, domestically and internationally.
