The Great Falls Tribune, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, in Great Falls, Montana is seeking a breaking news reporter to cover a wide range of stories, including breaking news, quick-turn/deadline narratives and trending topics.
Candidates should be skilled at backgrounding through search/social. This reporter should have experience or be willing to learn how to cover traditional “breaking news” scenarios such as local government actions, court proceedings/trials, gathering documents and first-person accounts.
The job requires a quick-thinking, proactive attitude and strong reporting and writing skills, a keen interest in breaking news on social media, and engaging and growing a social media audience. The ideal candidate will be able to write breaking news quickly, use social media effectively and will be asked to develop digital components for news stories, including shooting, editing and publishing video.
• Clear, fast writing is essential, along with the ability to turn fast-moving stories into readable storytelling and compelling video.
• This person should be curious about everything, able to break news and cover general stories that people are talking about now.
• This reporter works with reporters, editors and planners and is involved with production of the site, social media and other
platforms.
• This position requires flexibility, with shifts that will include weekends and some evenings.
• A bachelor’s degree in journalism or other discipline that requires substantial writing is required. Experience as a breaking news reporter a plus.
