Job Description
The VP Digital Contentwill report to the Chief Digital Officer and partner with the TEGNA leadership team to define and implement TEGNA’s strategic digital content plan and drive execution across TEGNA’s 39 local markets. This role will be instrumental in defining the future of local content to make a positive impact on the lives of millions of people across multiple digital platforms. As a leading broadcast and digital media company, TEGNA has ambitions to redefine local content and leverage new technologies to offer its producers, journalists and audience new ways to tell, consume and share stories that matter.
Responsibilities:
• Build and execute a digital content plan that will engage, inform and delight audiences
• Establish an editorial point of view and quality benchmark across TEGNA’s digital outlets
• Lead a centralized content team to achieve scale and efficiencies across TEGNA’s stations
• Utilize data to drive decision making around digital content publishing and strategy across TEGNA’s stations.
• Work with a group of regional directors of digital content to drive day to day execution and results in digital at TEGNA stations
• Collaborate closely with corporate and local station digital resources, news directors and general managers to innovate how stories are told digitally and improve the quality and effectiveness of TEGNA’s digital content production capabilities and workflows
• Project manage and prioritize content creation initiatives, calendars and deliverables to meet strategic objectives across divisions
• Develop and maintain clear guidelines for day to day management of our local digital properties that balance the needs of consumers, advertisers, partners and TEGNA.
• Work closely with Digital Product organization to help define both front and back end priorities
• Relentlessly track performance through data, metrics and reports and clearly communicate necessary adjustments quickly and with conviction
• Run point on strategic content planning activities including budgeting and reporting
• Institute and enforce operating policies and procedures to ensure TEGNA’s editorial standards are consistent
• Mentor, coach and influence multiple internal and external stakeholders
• Bring a positive, entrepreneurial and creative passion to the role and organization with the unyielding drive to experiment, measure, pivot and win
Location:
• This role can be based in Washington, DC at our CBS affiliate, WUSA9, in McLean, VA, at our headquarters, or possibly in New York, NY with frequent travel to DC area.
Job Requirements
Requirements:
• 10+ years of experience developing digital content and managing a digital team for a pure-play digital content company. We are looking to bring new experiences and ideas to TEGNA.
• Demonstrated ability to craft a content P&L, deliver compelling but saleable content experiences, understand advertiser needs and collaborate with the sales teams to package content for sponsorship
• Mastery over social channels, social tactics and prominent digital distribution outlets
• Passion for telling compelling stories with a strong point of view that also leverages the inherent interactivity of digital media (ie. user-generated content)
• Voracious appetite for experimenting with new technologies
• Deep experience and a native understanding of how to optimize certain platforms and algorithms including Facebook, YouTube/Google, OTT outlets, Snapchat, Twitter and ability to identify new partner channel opportunities
• Ability to communicate with persuasiveness, precision and effectiveness backed by data across various levels of the organization. Outstanding writing and presentation skills
• Strong financial, budgeting, critical thinking and analytical skills
• Solution-oriented leader with the ability to solve complex problems and build consensus
• Strong manager who can lead a highly-skilled and proficient editorial team, with the ability to provide and receive feedback
• Ability to recognize when projects are not going as planned, and the fortitude, confidence and grace under pressure to reassess and pivot
• Exceptional multi-tasking and prioritization skills
• Ability to plan, manage and execute in an agile environment
• Creative, self-motivated individual, with the burning desire to innovate
• Ability to travel for business as needed, approximately 15-30% of the time
• Proficiency with technology is a must
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
