Within the unique and exciting Health & Medical Sciences (HMS) unit, part of our Science, Technology and Medical Journal (STMJ) Publishing Organization, we are looking for a customer-focused, data-driven, entrepreneurial Senior Publisher. As Senior Publisher you deliver realization and business plans aiming at the maintenance and development of a portfolio in line with the overall STMJ strategy and objectives. You will manage and develop a complex portfolio of proprietary and society journal titles and related products and services in a number of medical specialties including psychiatry, anesthesiology and surgery.
To excel in this role you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both internally and externally and you are able to be an equal partner to editors, authors and societies. Due to your experience within the Publishing industry you can also easily participate in complex industry discussions with high level stakeholders. Furthermore you demonstrate the ability to work independently and focus on being a lead example to Publishers and Associate Publishers. You will report to the Publishing Director based in Philadelphia.
Your main responsibilities
• Overall responsibility for the journal product portfolio with emphasis on content growth and quality strategy. Development also includes achieving the right balance of open access articles within the portfolio.
• Overseeing and where necessary guiding negotiation of editorial, title and society contracts.
• Make an immediate impact and build and maintain a strong network with the various stakeholders.
• Manage communities of scholars both through travel and increasingly digital channels.
• Maintain full awareness of trends in STMJ publishing regarding data (sharing), (open) peer review, and dissemination.
• Participate in projects that run across STMJ. This could be related to a pilot of a new product, service or business model or to improving certain processes within Elsevier.
What you should bring
• University degree and 5-8 years relevant STM publishing experience
• Performance, results orientation and project management
• Strong communication skills (both verbal as well as written) and team player
• Networking and negotiation skills
• Business acumen
This job requires travelling 6-8 weeks per year, predominantly in North America and Europe.
