Newsy's innovative Washington D.C. or Chicago newsroom is looking for a talented senior videographer to shoot and produce videos for a vibrant, smart audience and oversee a team of videographers. You're a fit if you think originally shot videos should look less like local news packages and more like beautiful, informational films with high production value.
The senior videographer is a player-coach who will work with both independently and with reporters and producers to shoot and produce videos from the field and in the newsroom, as well as supervise a team of videographers. A traditional news videography / photography background is not required, but a proven record in creative videography is. Knowledge of Final Cut video editing software (or the ability to quickly learn / transfer skills from another editing program) is a plus.
What you'll do:
Work cooperatively with reporters and producers to shoot from the field and in the newsroom.
• Capture and edit visual and audio content for multiple platforms
• Conduct field interviews
• Tend to audio/visual concerns and questions, managing equipment and advising on what type of equipment would work best for each story
• Manage schedules, overtime and performance of a team of videographers
• Work with Director of Production to set videography standards and best practices to ensure cohesion of look and feel
• Perform other duties as needed and directed by newsroom management
What you'll bring:
• Excellent knowledge of best videography and lighting practices, with a proven record of creating high production value
• Experience with cinema cameras required; familiarity with DSLR cameras a plus
• At least 5 years experience shooting for an industry-leading media company
• Knowledge of Final Cut editing software or ability to transfer skills from another program
• Knowledge and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws
• A visual mind and ability to organize gear
• Proven leadership experience
• Ability to build animated graphics in Motion or After Effects is a strong plus
• Able to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, team-oriented environment
• Ability to meet or exceed established deadlines to ensure high-speed, high-quality content delivery
Education & Experience / Certifications:
• High School diploma or 7+ years of experience in related field required
• Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred
• People and project leadership/management experience strongly preferred
Work Environment:
• International travel may be required
• A relatively high degree of mental acuity and social skills are necessary to successfully interact with coworkers, newsroom supervisors, and the general public, often under time-sensitive conditions
• Overtime, overnight, weekend and/or holiday work may be required
• Valid Driver's License, good driving record and provide certificate of insurability with company required insurance limits when necessary
• Must be able to lift 40 pounds
