PRODUCER
Press & Sun-Bulletin and pressconects.com – part of the USA Today Network –
seeks a photographer/reporter for its fast-paced, digital-first newsroom. Although
based in Binghamton, this journalist will have regional responsibilities, also
working with our newsrooms in Elmira and Ithaca.
This staff member focuses on creating compelling photos and videos as well as writing breaking news articles and enterprise features. In addition to strong photography skills, videography and writing skills are a must. Situated a few hours from New York City, the area is home to Binghamton University – the top-rated SUNY school – and SUNY Broome community college as well as an emerging dining and craft brewery scene, and a thriving arts community for a city of its size.
Among the responsibilities of the photographer/reporter:
• Creates and develops storytelling in words and visually across multiple platforms, using photography, videography and stories to inform, engage and entertain fan bases.
• Demonstrates talent for spotting and pursuing news and features stories on own, without awaiting assignments.
• Ability to make photos and videos of high school sports games.
• Acts as a public ambassador through community outreach and connects with readers through social media.
• Works with editors and reporters and others to improve content quality.
The ideal candidate for this position possesses the following qualities, knowledge or skills:
• Bachelor’s in Communication, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education.
• Internship or previous experience in the job duties preferred.
• Experience with multimedia storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
• Exceptional core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography).
• Writing and reporting skills and exceptional news judgment.
• Ability to use basic and advanced computer programs, including but not limited to video editing software and Adobe Photoshop.
• Self-motivation and self-direction.
• Industry knowledge.
• Organizational skills.
• Understanding of social media and how to respond and engage fan base on digital platforms.
• Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
• Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
• Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour news environment.
• Must embrace peer-to-peer feedback and training.
• Applies innovative, creative thanking to support the company’s goals.
• Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
• Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.
